Local perceptions of changes in mangrove ecosystem services and their implications for livelihoods and management in the Rufiji Delta, Tanzania

Baraka P. Nyangoko et al.

Summary: Understanding the status and trends of ecosystem services in a changing environment is crucial for effective management of mangrove ecosystems. This study explores the perceptions of local communities in the Rufiji Delta, Tanzania, regarding the status and trends of mangrove ecosystem services, drivers of change, and impacts on local livelihoods. The study finds that communities near mangroves rated the status of ecosystem services higher than those far from mangroves. Provisioning services were perceived to be in worse and more declining state compared to regulating, cultural, and supporting services.

Seagrass Invertebrate Fisheries, Their Value Chains and the Role of LMMAs in Sustainability of the Coastal Communities-Case of Southern Mozambique

Sadia Chitara-Nhandimo et al.

Summary: This study documents the activity of invertebrate gleaning within seagrass meadows in eastern African communities, providing qualitative and quantitative information on its value chain and stakeholders. The study focuses on the recently created Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) within Inhambane Bay (IB), which demonstrates innovative seagrass invertebrate fishery management. The findings show that around 7.7 and 7.6 tons of invertebrates are collected during peak catch weeks in Maputo Bay (MB) and IB, respectively. The resources are sold at local markets, food fairs, restaurants, and used for household consumption. The LMMAs, covering 1172 hectares of fisheries management, along with community engagement, intervention on value chains, play a central role in tangible invertebrate fishery management.

Maintaining functional connectivity in grassland corridors between plantation forests promotes high-quality habitat and conserves range restricted grasshoppers

K. Jurie Theron et al.

Summary: Grassland corridors within commercial timber plantations in South Africa have the potential to connect conservation areas, but the impact of the production landscape on functional connectivity has not been investigated. This study used grasshoppers as indicators and combined species distribution modelling, functional connectivity analysis, and community analysis to understand how these corridors contribute to biodiversity conservation. The results show that wide corridors with different elevations and slopes support different grasshopper assemblages and promote species turnover. Functional connectivity depends on the availability of high-quality habitat shaped by prescribed burning, with implications for range restricted species. Not all high-quality habitat is functionally connected, suggesting the need for conservation intervention.

Identifying global and local drivers of change in mangrove cover and the implications for management

J. M. Maina et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of multiple threats on mangroves and their relative exposure. By applying machine learning methods to determine the importance of change drivers and mapping mangrove exposure spatially, the study highlighted the importance of catchment erosion, human pressure, sea level, and macroclimate as main drivers affecting mangroves in the Western Indian Ocean region.
