Effect of bisphosphonate on hip fracture in patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia according to age: a meta-analysis and systematic review

Sichun Zhao et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis and systematic review show that bisphosphonates reduce the incidence of hip fracture in patients of different ages with osteoporosis or osteopenia. The reduction in hip fracture risk was observed across all age groups, with zoledronic acid, risedronate, and alendronate all showing effectiveness in reducing hip fractures in osteoporosis or osteopenia populations. The association between bisphosphonate use and hip fracture risk does not seem to be affected by age.

The Role of Sclerostin in Bone Diseases

Elias S. Vasiliadis et al.

Summary: Sclerostin is an important regulator of bone homeostasis through inhibition of the Wnt-signaling pathway and is involved in the pathogenesis of various skeletal diseases. Ongoing research highlights the therapeutic implications of sclerostin in different pathological conditions. Antisclerostin antibodies have been approved for osteoporosis treatment, and studies are being conducted to evaluate their effectiveness in other skeletal disorders and cancer.

Mary Jane De Souza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of prune consumption on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women and found that a daily dose of 50 grams of prunes can prevent a decrease in hip bone mineral density. This effect persisted for 12 months with high compliance and retention rates.

Osteoporosis in older adults

Beatrice Bouvard et al.

Summary: The incidence of fragility fractures increases with age after 50, particularly in the elderly, leading to serious consequences. Falls and decreased bone mineral density are major factors in fragility fractures in older adults. Despite advancements in osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment, there is still a significant treatment gap in the elderly population.

The Effect of Inflammation on Bone

Scott Epsley et al.

Summary: Bone remodeling is a continual process involving osteoblasts and osteoclasts, where inflammation plays a crucial role in skewing the process towards resorption. Inflammatory mediators interact with bone cells to alter the expression of regulatory factors, leading to various bone-related pathologies. Further research is needed to advance early detection and treatments for bone diseases influenced by inflammation.

Nader Salari et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of osteoporosis among elders globally is 21.7%, with an overall prevalence of 35.3% for older men and women worldwide. The highest prevalence of osteoporosis in the elders was reported in Asia at 24.3%. This highlights the need for measures to prevent and treat osteoporosis among the elderly population, considering the high prevalence rate.

Research Progress of the Role of Anthocyanins on Bone Regeneration

Wei Mao et al.

Summary: Regulation of osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation is recognized as effective therapeutic targets to accelerate bone regeneration in osteopenic conditions. Anthocyanins have received increasing attention recently due to their well-documented biological effects in chronic diseases like osteoporosis, showing potential therapeutic application in repressing bone loss and helping fragility fracture healing. Understanding the role and mechanisms of ACNs on bone regeneration is beneficial for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis and exploration of new bone regenerative medicine.
