A new neutron-gamma porosity measurement method for pulsed neutron logging tools

Xinyue Fu et al.

Summary: This paper aims to clarify the theory of neutron-gamma porosity measurement, improve the measurement sensitivity, and eliminate the effects of environmental factors. Based on neutron diffusion theory and gamma transport theory, a new neutron-gamma porosity measurement method is developed, which is analyzed for its applicability in different environments using the Monte Carlo method and verified using a synthetic model. The results indicate that the new method has great potential for extensive applications as an alternative for the compensated neutron porosity logging measurement method.

A LWD gas-reservoir recognition method based on the inelastic gamma information of the drill collar

Guangjun Xing et al.

Summary: Neutron logging technology can identify gas reservoirs by detecting thermal neutron or secondary gamma information, with the method using inelastic gamma information being more promising. A new LWD gas-reservoir recognition method based on inelastic gamma information of drill collar is proposed, which is less affected by formation density decay and has higher detection efficiency. This recognition method has high sensitivity and broad application prospects in LWD.

A new gamma density measurement method for cased-hole formation evaluation

Qiong Zhang et al.

Summary: Under complex well conditions, cased-hole formation evaluation has become increasingly important, and a new gamma density measurement method is proposed in this work to overcome existing challenges. The method includes constructing a Monte Carlo modelling database, designing a fast forward detector response model, and developing an inverse formation model. The method has been verified and applied successfully, providing accurate density results in uncertain cement conditions.

Improving the pulsed neutron-gamma density method with machine learning regression algorithms

Duo Dong et al.

Summary: Formation bulk density is a critical parameter for formation evaluation. The pulsed neutron-gamma density (NGD) measurement is emerging as an alternative to traditional chemical source-based gamma-gamma density (GGD) measurement. However, factors such as the variation of secondary inelastic gamma-ray sources and the impact of borehole configuration affect the accuracy of NGD measurement. To improve density accuracy, researchers introduced machine learning regressors and optimized the models, achieving better results.

Application analysis on the different neutron gamma density (NGD) logging methods

Quanying Zhang et al.

Summary: Neutron gamma density (NGD) logging is a promising alternative to traditional density logging (GGD) in the oil industry for resolving radiation and safety issues. Different NGD methods based on fast neutron, thermal neutron, and capture gamma detection coexist in well-logging with considerable differences in tool specifications. Despite different measurement systems and data processing methods, all three NGD methods can eliminate the HI effect and accurately obtain formation density, but may have significant errors in wellbore size and fluid changes. Countries to other two NGD methods, the NGD-FC method performs well in oil or gas-saturated formations, while NGD-TC and NGD-CC methods have large errors in gas-saturated formations. Additionally, the impact of formation water salinity differs among the NGD methods. This study provides guidance for tool design, data processing, and environmental correction in NGD technology.

An alternative method for sourceless density measurement with boron sleeve gamma detectors

Quanying Zhang et al.

Summary: The NGD-BD method is a promising alternative to the NGD-GD method, showing improved performance in high-brine formations and oil and gas formations while exhibiting slight decreases in density accuracy and precision compared to NGD-GD method. Additionally, the NGD-BD method has better performance in terms of density accuracy, precision, and environmental impact than other NGD methods using hydrogen capture gamma information.
