This article discusses the need for extensive upgrades of the LHC detectors, particularly the Outer Tracker, due to the demanding conditions and radiation of the High Luminosity LHC scenario. The design choices, technological approaches, and R&D activities for the Outer Tracker Phase-2 upgrade are highlighted.
The High Luminosity LHC scenario, HL-LHC, will require an extensive upgrade program of the LHC detectors. The current CMS Outer Tracker, already running beyond design specifications, will not be able to survive the HL-LHC radiation conditions and thus CMS will need a completely new Outer Tracker in order to fully exploit the highly demanding conditions and the delivered luminosity. The design choices for the Outer Tracker Phase-2 upgrade are discussed along with some highlights of the technological approaches and R&D activities.
