Plasma response impact on RMP divertor footprint modeling for KSTAR

H. Frerichs et al.

Summary: The striation pattern of heat loads on divertor targets depends on the plasma response to external resonant magnetic perturbations applied for ELM suppression. Analysis shows that the extent of this pattern is sensitive to the radial location of equilibrium truncation, and a smaller extent is found if the truncation is closer to the separatrix. Simulations demonstrate that by adjusting RMP coil parameters, the peak heat load can be reduced within the range of ELM suppression.

Progress of HL-2A experiments and HL-2M program

X. R. Duan et al.

Summary: Since 2018, significant progress has been made in the HL-2A experimental program, particularly in the development of advanced plasma physics, edge localized mode (ELM) control physics, and technology. Achievements include optimized plasma confinement, obtaining high-beta (N) H-mode plasmas with an internal transport barrier, and improvement of plasma confinement through impurity injection. ELM control using resonance magnetic perturbation or impurity injection has been achieved in a wide parameter regime. Additionally, disruption control and prediction algorithms based on deep learning have been successfully developed. The commissioning of the HL-2M tokamak in 2020 further enhances research capabilities.

Edge-coherent oscillation providing nearly continuous transport during edge-localized mode mitigation by n=1 resonant magnetic perturbation in HL-2A

T. F. Sun et al.

Summary: An edge-coherent oscillation with a bursting feature was observed in the steep-gradient pedestal region of H-mode plasmas in the HL-2A tokamak. It was found that the oscillation drives a significant outflow of particles as directly measured by probes, thus providing a channel for nearly continuous extra particle transport across the pedestal during ELM mitigation by RMP. The ECO with a frequency of about 2 kHz is located at the edge pedestal region and is excited by three-wave interaction of turbulence enhanced by the RMP field.

Divertor detachment in the pre-fusion power operation phase in ITER during application of resonant magnetic perturbations

H. Frerichs et al.

Summary: The detachment of divertor plasma during the first pre-fusion power operation (PFPO-1) phase in ITER when applying resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) fields was evaluated through 3D plasma boundary modelling with EMC3-EIRENE. The study discussed plasma response effects from a linearized, resistive, single fluid MHD model and highlighted the role of field amplification near the separatrix for the magnetic footprint on the divertor targets.
