A new Galerkin Reduction approach for the analysis of a fully coupled foil air bearing rotor system with bilinear foil model

Talieh Pourashraf et al.

Summary: The foil air bearing (FAB) is crucial for oil-free turbomachinery but is computationally challenging. Galerkin Reduction (GR) allows efficient integration of compressible Reynolds Equation without spatial discretisation. A new GR approach has been developed to overcome limitations, improving computational efficiency without compromising accuracy and reliability.

A comparison of modal analyses of foil-air bearing rotor systems using two alternative linearisation methods

Philip Bonello et al.

Summary: This paper verifies the accuracy of the classical linear force coefficients method (LFCM) in the free vibration analysis of foil-air bearing rotor systems and identifies cases where it gives misleading results. A novel robust procedure is proposed for the computation of the LFCM's Campbell diagrams and modal stability plots. The study also compares the LFCM's modal analysis capability with a recently developed direct linearization method, finding contradictory results to a previous study.

The Application of the Arbitrary-Order Galerkin Reduction Method to the Dynamic Analysis of a Rotor With a Preloaded Single-Pad Foil-Air Bearing

Ibrahim Ghalayini et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel application of arbitrary-order Galerkin reduction (GR) to both nonlinear and linearized analyses of rotor systems supported by single-pad foil-air bearings with variable radial clearance. The simulations show that the preload must exceed a certain level in order to delay the onset of instability speed, and significant delay in the onset of instability speed and suppression of subsynchronous vibration is possible when the preload is comparable to the nominal clearance. The results are experimentally validated.

A computationally efficient nonlinear foil air bearing model for fully coupled, transient rotor dynamic investigations

Christoph Baum et al.

Summary: A novel physical and mathematical model of foil air bearings was developed with a focus on computational time-efficiency for rotor dynamic investigations. The model, which accounts for nonlinear deformation behavior and linear viscous damping, was validated using published experimental data and reduction technique, showing a decrease in computation time up to a factor of 1000 with a slight loss in accuracy. The bearing model was also coupled with a rigid rotor model to demonstrate its applicability during a run-up and coast-down.

Gas foil bearings with radial injection: Multi-domain stability analysis and unbalance response

Sebastian von Osmanski et al.

Summary: Gas foil bearings have the potential for oil-free and environmentally friendly support of high-speed rotating machinery, but face technical limitations when applied in heavier machinery. Hybridizing gas foil bearings with radial gas injection may be a possible solution to overcome these limitations.
