Pathogenicity Variation in Two Genomes of Cercospora Species Causing Gray Leaf Spot in Maize

Zixiang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study obtained high-quality reference genomes of two Cercospora species (C.zeae-maydis and C.zeina) using nanopore sequencing, and found that the difference in genome size is mainly due to increased long terminal repeat retrotransposons in C.zeae-maydis. It is also discovered that C.zeae-maydis has more carbohydrate-binding gene families, particularly CBM4, CBM37, and CBM66, which may contribute to its variation in pathogenicity. Additionally, the study predicted 114 and 107 effectors in C.zeae-maydis and C.zeina, respectively, with 47 and 46 having unique potential pathogenicity.

Unveiling genotype x environment interactions towards identification of stable sources of resistance in chickpea-collar rot pathosystem exploiting GGE biplot technique

Sanju Tamang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate genotype x environment interactions to identify durable resistant genotypes against collar rot in chickpea. 25 promising genotypes were selected based on disease reaction and evaluated across three locations in two consecutive years. The results indicated that genotype had a higher influence on disease reaction than environment, supporting the necessity for multi-location, multi-year trials.

Genome wide association study identifies SNPs associated with northern corn leaf blight caused by Exserohilum turcicum in tropical maize germplasm (Zea mays L.)

Diego Ary Rizzardi et al.

Summary: The objective of this research was to identify genomic regions or associated SNPs involved in resistance to Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) in a panel of maize inbred lines. A genome-wide association study was conducted using phenotypic data collected in two environments. Results showed that 14 SNPs were associated with resistance to NCLB, explaining 0.5% to 5.7% of the variation. Candidate gene models GRMZM2G042920, GRMZM2G041774, and GRMZM2G056564 were found to play an important role in corn's response to various stresses.

Adaptability and stability of soybean (Glycine max L.) genotypes in semiarid conditions

Jose Ricardo Tavares de Albuquerque et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the adaptability and phenotypic stability of 21 soybean genotypes under semiarid conditions. The results showed that the genotype x environment interaction of soybean is complex, posing challenges for cultivar recommendation. The genotypes BRS Perola, BMX OPUS IPRO, Pampeana 007 RR, Pampeana 20 RR, and BRS Sambaiba RR exhibited high adaptability and stability in grain productivity.

Maize Anthracnose Stalk Rot in the Genomic Era

Renata Belisario et al.

Summary: Anthracnose stalk rot (ASR) of maize causes significant economic losses annually in the United States. Current management strategies focus on host resistance and reducing plant stressors. Future management may rely more heavily on host resistance, though effective sources are limited.

Adaptability and Stability of Safflower Genotypes for Oil Production

Sebastiao Soares de Oliveira Neto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the agronomic performance of 11 safflower genotypes and identify stable genotypes with high grain yield in different environments. The results showed that genotypes P9, P35, and P31 exhibited high stability and yield, while genotypes P7, P35, P31, and P9 were predictable in their behavior. Genotypes P11 and P21 were recommended for cultivation due to their impressive grain yield and oil content. Safflower proved to be a viable crop in the Brazilian Cerrado and can be used for oil production in periods of uncertain corn production.

Genetic variability and trait association in maize (Zea mays L.) varieties for growth and yield traits

Bigul Thapa Magar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the variation, heritability, genetic advance, and correlation among traits in maize genotypes. Results showed significant differences among genotypes for growth, yield, and related traits, with grain yield having the highest variation and leaf width at maturity the lowest. Traits like grain yield and 1000 grain weight demonstrated higher heritability and genetic advance percentages, while leaf length and width had lower values. Grain yield exhibited positive correlations with test weight, cob length, cob diameter, and number of rows per cob, suggesting their potential for indirect selection to improve maize productivity.

Occurrence and distribution of single or mixed infection of phytoplasma and spiroplasma causing corn stunting in Brazil

Sarah R. Galvao et al.

Summary: Maize bushy stunt and corn stunt have become important diseases of maize in Brazil. Multiplex PCR testing revealed different distribution patterns of phytoplasma and spiroplasma in maize samples from different regions, with temperature potentially playing a key role in shaping the prevalence of these plant pathogenic bacteria.
