Millisecond-Lived Circular Rydberg Atoms in a Room-Temperature Experiment

H. Wu et al.

Summary: Circular Rydberg states have large mutual interactions and long lifetimes, but these lifetimes are cancelled by blackbody radiation-induced transfers at room temperature. In this study, we demonstrate a room-temperature lifetime of over 1 millisecond for a circular state with a principal quantum number of 60 in a laser-cooled atomic sample. This is achieved by using a simple plane-parallel capacitor that efficiently inhibits the blackbody radiation-induced transfers and provides large optical access to the atoms.

Electric Field Analysis in a Cold-Ion Source Using Stark Spectroscopy of Rydberg Atoms

Alisher Duspayev et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyze the electric fields in ion sources generated by the quasicontinuous photoionization of cold Rb atoms trapped in a near-concentric, in-vacuum cavity for 1064-nm laser light. The Stark effects of Rb 57F and nearby high-angular-momentum Rydberg levels are utilized to study the net electric-field probability distribution within the ion-source region. The experimental spectra are compared with theoretical spectra, and the results are in good agreement.

Observation of a molecular bond between ions and Rydberg atoms

Nicolas Zuber et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a new type of molecular ion based on the interaction between the ionic charge and a flipping-induced dipole of a highly excited electron, called Rydberg atom. This molecular ion has a bond length of several micrometres. Using a high-resolution ion microscope, they have measured the vibrational spectrum and spatially resolved the bond length and angular alignment of the molecule. Due to the large bond length, the molecular dynamics are extremely slow.

Survey of Hyperfine Structure Measurements in Alkali Atoms

Maria Allegrini et al.

Summary: The spectroscopic hyperfine constants for all alkali atoms are reported, with a focus on long-lived atomic isotopes from lithium to cesium. The measured data for ground states of all available isotopes of francium are also listed. The study presents results obtained since the beginning of laser investigations and performs global analyses based on scaling laws and hyperfine anomalies.

Dynamic Polarizability of the 85Rb 5D3/2-State in 1064 nm Light

Alisher Duspayev et al.

Summary: We report a measurement of the dynamic scalar polarizability of the 5D(3/2) state in Rb-85 atoms at a laser wavelength of 1064 nm. The experimental results are consistent with a previous measurement, and the light intensity of 1064 nm is calibrated by analyzing the light shifts of the D1 line.

Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy of a four-level ladder system in atomic rubidium

Michael J. Lim et al.

Summary: We demonstrate Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy for a four-level ladder-configuration system in atomic rubidium that probes Rydberg states. By applying frequency sidebands to the coupling laser, we observed modulation transfer involving the uppermost step. The experimental results show that the relative frequency drift of the coupling laser can be limited using the phase response of the spectroscopy, even with relatively low laser powers.

Photoionization of Rydberg atoms in optical lattices

R. Cardman et al.

Summary: The study introduces a formalism for the photoionization and potential energy curves of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical lattices, demonstrating the impact of lattice-induced photoionization on Rydberg atom lifetimes across different optical lattice depths. The behaviour of photoionization is largely governed by the rapid decrease of photoionization cross sections with increasing angular momentum, lattice-induced angular momentum mixing, and interference between photoionization transition amplitudes in lattice-mixed and free-electron states. In deep optical lattices, angular momentum mixing leads to a complex potential energy curve structure, while in shallower lattices, atoms on low angular momentum curves remain relatively unaffected by mixing and maintain high photoionization rates. Data on photoionization in different lattice depths have potential applications in optical control and high-precision spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms.

ac polarizability and photoionization-cross-section measurements in an optical lattice

Ryan Cardman et al.

Summary: This study utilized double-resonant two-photon laser spectroscopy to measure the dynamic scalar polarizability of the rubidium 5D(3/2) level at a wavelength of 1064 nm. The results were in agreement with estimates, and the photoionization cross section of the 5D(3/2) level at 1064 nm was determined from spectral linewidths.

Long-Range Atom-Ion Rydberg Molecule: A Novel Molecular Binding Mechanism

Markus Deiss et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel binding mechanism between a neutral Rydberg atom and an atomic ion at a large internuclear distance. It discusses important properties of the long-range atom-ion Rydberg molecule, as well as methods for producing and detecting it. The unusual properties of this molecule offer interesting prospects for studies of wave packet dynamics in engineered potential energy landscapes.

Long-range Rydberg-atom-ion molecules of Rb and Cs

A. Duspayev et al.

Summary: A novel type of Rydberg dimer is proposed, consisting of a Rydberg-state atom bound to a distant positive ion through long-range electric-multipole interaction. The potential energy curves exhibit deep, long-range wells that support multiple vibrational states of Rydberg-atom-ion molecules. Experimental considerations for the realization of these molecules are discussed, including photoassociation in weak and strong optical-coupling regimes.
