Individual variability in the size and organization of the human arcuate nucleus of the medulla

Joan S. Baizer et al.

Summary: The arcuate nucleus is present in most human brains and is considered a precerebellar relay nucleus, but has also been found to be absent in cases of SIDS and in some adults. There is variability in the size, shape, and position of the arcuate nucleus in adults, with left-right asymmetry and discontinuity in some cases. Immunostaining shows expression of various neurochemical compartments and inhibitory input to arcuate nucleus neurons.

Development of the human perihypoglossal nuclei from mid-gestation to the perinatal period: A morphological study

Katsuyuki Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: This study describes the morphology of the human perihypoglossal nuclei (PHN) from mid-gestation to the perinatal period. The results show that the dorsal and ventral PHN can be identified at mid-gestation, and the topographic relationships of the four nuclei are conserved until the perinatal period. The characteristic neuronal cytoarchitecture of each group is rapidly formed by 28-30 postmenstrual weeks.

Development of the human hypoglossal nucleus from mid-gestation to the perinatal period: A morphological study

Katsuyuki Yamaguchi

Summary: The study found that in the human hypoglossal nucleus, the volume increases exponentially with age, while the number and profile area of neurons change almost simultaneously, with occasional neuron degeneration at certain stages.
