Omega-3 fatty acids prevent nicotine withdrawal-induced exacerbation of anxiety and depression by affecting oxidative stress balance, inflammatory response, BDNF and serotonin metabolism in rats

Ghulam Yahya Amiry et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the effects of adolescent nicotine exposure and subsequent abstinence on anxiety and depressive behaviors in rats. Nicotine withdrawal exacerbated anxiety behaviors through changes in oxidative stress balance, inflammatory response, and serotonin metabolism. Omega-3 fatty acid pre-treatment significantly prevented nicotine withdrawal-induced complications by restoring the mentioned biochemical changes. Overall, we suggest omega-3 fatty acid supplementation as a safe, inexpensive, and effective strategy for preventing or ameliorating detrimental effects caused by nicotine withdrawal at the cellular and behavioral levels.

Biological determinants impact the neurovascular toxicity of nicotine and tobacco smoke: A pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics perspective

Sabrina Rahman Archie et al.

Summary: The detrimental effects of nicotine on the central nervous system are caused by its neurotoxic role on blood-brain barrier permeability, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor expression, and the dopaminergic system. Sex and age are important biological determinants that can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of nicotine. Understanding the impact of sex and age on nicotine-induced neurotoxicity can help develop personalized treatment strategies for mitigating the harmful effects of nicotine.

Inbred mouse strain differences in alcohol and nicotine addiction-related phenotypes from adolescence to adulthood

Laurel R. Seemiller et al.

Summary: Understanding the genetic basis of nicotine and alcohol use predisposition is crucial for public health efforts, as genetic contributions may vary with age. Animal models allow the study of genetic background and age effects on drug-related behaviors, controlling important variables like drug exposure. Inbred mouse lines have shown genetic contributions to nicotine and alcohol addiction-related behaviors. This review summarizes the differences in these behaviors across inbred mouse strains and discusses their changes from adolescence to adulthood.

Smokeless tobacco and cigarette smoking: chemical mechanisms and cancer prevention

Stephen S. Hecht et al.

Summary: Tobacco products containing nicotine and carcinogens are highly detrimental, causing millions of cancer deaths worldwide annually. The presence of multiple carcinogens in both smokeless tobacco products and cigarettes can now be assessed using biomarkers, which can help identify individuals at highest risk of developing tobacco-related cancer. Regulating the levels of carcinogens and nicotine in tobacco products, coupled with evidence-based tobacco control efforts, are recognized as effective pathways to prevent tobacco-related cancer.
