Underground ibogaine use for the treatment of substance use disorders: A qualitative analysis of subjective experiences

Summary: Ibogaine, a naturally occurring alkaloid found in plants, has been used experimentally for the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD), particularly opioid-related disorders. This study aimed to understand the psychological aspects of underground ibogaine use for the treatment of SUD. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants with SUD, and the data were analyzed using grounded theory approach. The study identified various psychological effects experienced by participants, including interpersonal and transpersonal experiences, autobiographical memories, and motivation for lifestyle change.

Psychedelics promote neuroplasticity through the activation of intracellular 5-HT2A receptors
