Intrinsically dysregulated cellular stress signaling genes and gene networks in postpartum depression

Sarah A. Rudzinskas et al.

Summary: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant cause of illness and death in women. The administration and withdrawal of supraphysiologic estradiol and progesterone (E2 + P) can cause affective symptoms to reoccur in women with a history of PPD but not in control subjects. Transcriptomic analysis of lymphoblastoid cell lines derived from women with and without past PPD revealed dysregulated cellular responses and intracellular signaling differences as potential factors influencing mood and increasing the risk of PPD.

Effects of gonadal steroids on reward circuitry function and anhedonia in women with a history of postpartum depression

C. E. Schiller et al.

Summary: This double-blinded pharmaco-fMRI study shows that adding back and withdrawing hormones increases anhedonia in women without pleasure. Both hormone sensitive and non-hormone sensitive individuals exhibit decreased reward-related brain function during withdrawal.

Mood during pregnancy: Trends, structure, and invariance by gestational day
