Sarcopenia definition, diagnosis and treatment: consensus is growing

Avan Aihie Sayer et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disorder that commonly occurs with advancing age and long-term conditions. It is associated with adverse health effects and its recognition in clinical practice is relatively recent. Progress in the future may include the use of routine health data, prescription of resistance exercise, and the translation of biology and epidemiology into new treatment research.

Defining terms commonly used in sarcopenia research: a glossary proposed by the Global Leadership in Sarcopenia (GLIS) Steering Committee

Peggy M. Cawthon et al.

Summary: The aim of this paper is to define terms commonly related to sarcopenia to enable standardization of these terms in research and clinical settings. This paper provides definitions for commonly used terminology in sarcopenia in both clinical and research settings. As new methods and technologies are developed, this terminology may be expanded or refined over time.

Osteoporosis in Parkinson's Disease: Relevance of Distal Radius Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Sarcopenia

Yan Jing Tan et al.

Summary: The study found that PD patients had significantly lower distal radius BMD and T-scores compared to controls, with no significant differences at the femoral neck/lumbar spine. Distal radius DXA identified an additional 11.0% of PD patients with osteoporosis, particularly in female patients. Female gender and sarcopenia were independent predictors for osteoporosis in PD.

Determinant factors of sarcopenia in individuals with Parkinson's disease

Marcella Campos Lima da Luz et al.

Summary: The study found that in individuals with Parkinson's disease, the prevalence of sarcopenia was 19.5% and was associated with factors such as age, poor performance in daily activities, and nutritional status. Age, disease severity, body weight, and SARC-F score were identified as the main factors influencing the occurrence of sarcopenia in this population.

Sarcopenia and frailty in individuals with dementia: A systematic review

Samantha J. Waite et al.

Summary: Population aging has led to an increase in age-related conditions, including sarcopenia and frailty, which are common causes of functional decline in older individuals. This review found that there is a higher prevalence of frailty and sarcopenia in dementia patients, but there is still limited research on how they interrelate with dementia.

SARC-F and SARC-CalF in screening for sarcopenia in older adults with Parkinson's disease

Marcella Campos Lima da Luz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of SARC-F and SARC-CalF in screening for sarcopenia in patients with Parkinson's disease, finding that SARC-F had relatively low sensitivity, while SARC-CalF performed better in diagnostic discrimination with the addition of calf circumference.

Sarcopenia in Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yingying Cai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sarcopenia in PD patients and reveal the relationship with clinical features. The results showed that sarcopenia is common in PD patients with high heterogeneity. PD patients with sarcopenia had a higher incidence of falls, but there was no significant difference in sex ratio between patients with and without sarcopenia.
