Distribution of cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions: systematic review and classification

Letizia Nitro et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the localization and prevalence of cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions and proposed a four-grade classification based on the location of the lesions. The study found that most lesions occurred in the nasal septum, with decreasing prevalence from the upper nasal cavity to the middle nasal cavity, and ultimately extending to neurocranial structures. There was inconsistency in the reporting of nasal deformities, and information on cocaine use duration, frequency, and status was limited. Future prospective studies are needed to validate the classification and explore its relationship with lesion evolution.

Cocaine-Induced Midline Destructive Lesions (CIMDL): A Real Challenge in Diagnosis

Michele Di Cosola et al.

Summary: Prolonged use of intranasal cocaine can lead to severe nose structure damage known as cocaine-induced midline lesions (CIMDL). This condition mimics various diseases, making diagnosis challenging. A comprehensive diagnostic approach involving medical history, clinical examination, imaging tests, and laboratory investigations is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of CIMDL.
