Early arteriopathy in Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome 5. Case report and review of literature

Ivana Markovic et al.

Summary: Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome (AGS) is an autosomal recessive disease that mimics congenital viral infection and mainly affects the brain, immune system, and skin. The dominant clinical symptom is the subacute onset of severe encephalopathy, which manifests as irritability, loss of ability, slowing of head growth, and poor nutrition.

Cerebrovascular involvement in systemic childhood vasculitides

Martina Held et al.

Summary: Pediatric vasculitides can affect the central nervous system, leading to diverse manifestations and even fatal cerebrovascular events. Despite progress in prevention and treatment, stroke remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the general population. This article summarizes the CNS manifestations, etiology, risk factors, preventive strategies, and therapeutic options in pediatric vasculitides.

The Spectrum of Vessel Wall Imaging (VWI) Findings in COVID-19-Associated Neurological Syndromes: A Review

Mohamad Syafeeq Faeez Md Noh et al.

Summary: Since the start of the pandemic, extensive studies have reported neurological syndromes associated with COVID-19 from all over the world. It was initially believed to primarily affect the respiratory system, but it has become apparent that the virus also affects the neurological system. Researchers and physicians are puzzled by the neuroimaging findings of COVID-19-associated neurological syndromes and are seeking a common feature to guide patient management. This review focuses on the vessel wall imaging (VWI) features and discusses the potential challenges in interpreting these findings.

Neurologic Toxicity of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: A Review of Literature

Victor Albarran et al.

Summary: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment of multiple malignant diseases, but their systemic activity may lead to a wide range of immune-related side effects. Neurotoxicity, although less frequent, is of particular importance due to its potential severity and impact on cancer treatment. Further research is needed to better understand the pathogenesis and develop effective treatment strategies.

Lina Du et al.

Summary: Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV), also known as Henoch-Schonlein Purpura, is a common systemic vasculitis in children, presenting with palpable skin purpura, arthritis, gastrointestinal tract involvement, and kidney damage. Rare systemic manifestations include neurological symptoms, scrotal involvement, and cardiopulmonary disease. Prompt diagnosis and adequate treatment are crucial for optimal outcomes.

P. Malik et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging plays a crucial role in diagnosing CNS involvement in pediatric patients with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. This study identified two distinct MR imaging patterns in children with CNS HLH, with older patients showing significant parenchymal disease and younger patients exhibiting an attenuated imaging phenotype. Mutations and protein expression may correlate with the onset age and clinical presentation of CNS HLH in children, particularly brainstem and cerebellitis patterns.

Cerebral vasculitis associated with drug abuse

David S. Younger

Summary: There are only a few histologically confirmed cases of cerebral vasculitis due to drug abuse in the literature. Invasive laboratory investigations are usually deemed unnecessary given the availability of highly accurate vascular neuroimaging techniques. Management typically involves avoiding further exposure and minimizing the neurotoxic effects of abused substances and polypharmacy.

Pediatric Behcet's Disease

Mehmet Yildiz et al.

Summary: Behcet's Disease is a systemic vasculitis characterized by aphthous lesions in the oral and genital mucosae and uveitis, with the highest incidence in communities living along the historical Silk Road. While the disease usually develops in young adulthood, about 15-20% of patients develop it in childhood. Pediatric BD differs from adult BD not only in age of onset but also in clinical findings, disease severity, and outcome.

Neurology of inflammatory bowel disease

Jose M. Ferro et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory conditions that not only affect the digestive system but can also cause neurological manifestations in the central and peripheral nervous system. The pathophysiology of neurological complications in IBD involves immune mediated processes as well as other mechanisms such as thromboembolism, infections, and nutritional deficiencies. There is a bidirectional association between multiple sclerosis and IBD, and caution is needed when treating patients with both conditions.

Systematic review of childhood-onset polyarteritis nodosa and DADA2

Muserref Kasap Cuceoglu et al.

Summary: Diagnosis of childhood polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) has become challenging after the definition of deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2). We aimed to define the differential features of pediatric PAN and DADA2 patients in our center and in the literature. In conclusion, DADA2 should be considered in a child with PAN-like phenotype, especially in the presence of young age at disease onset, parental consanguinity, strokes, lymphopenia, and lack of thrombocytosis during active disease. Anti-TNF treatment is indicated for vasculitic DADA2. Cyclophosphamide could be switched to MMF when remission is confirmed with PVAS in severe PAN.
