Free-water imaging of the cholinergic basal forebrain and pedunculopontine nucleus in Parkinson's disease

Nicola J. Ray et al.

Summary: Free-water imaging can predict dopamine system degeneration in Parkinson's disease and enhance the sensitivity of traditional DTI metrics. However, it has not been applied to investigate cholinergic system degeneration. Free-water imaging, free-water-corrected DTI, and volumetry were used to extract structural metrics from the cholinergic basal forebrain and pedunculopontine nucleus in people with Parkinson's disease.

Free water corrected diffusion tensor imaging discriminates between good and poor outcomes of comatose patients after cardiac arrest

Hanneke M. Keijzer et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential value of free water corrected mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), for predicting the neurological recovery of comatose patients after cardiac arrest. The results show that MD and FA can discriminate between patients with good and poor outcomes, indicating their potential in multimodal outcome prediction.

Insights into human cerebral white matter maturation and degeneration across the adult lifespan

Matthew Kiely et al.

Summary: This study evaluated sex and age-related differences in white matter microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The results showed that myelin content and axonal density in white matter exhibited nonlinear changes with age, and the posterior white matter regions were more preserved from neurodegeneration compared to anterior regions. Additionally, DTI indices were moderately correlated with myelin content, indicating their sensitivity to other constituents of white matter tissue.

Charting brain growth and aging at high spatial precision

Saige Rutherford et al.

Summary: Defining reference models for population variation and studying individual deviations is crucial for understanding inter-individual variability and its relation to medical conditions. This study constructed a reference cohort of neuroimaging data and used normative modeling to analyze the lifespan trajectories of cortical thickness and subcortical volume. The models were validated and applied to a psychiatric sample, demonstrating their clinical value.

Accurate free-water estimation in white matter from fast diffusion MRI acquisitions using the spherical means technique

Antonio Tristan-Vega et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the partial volume fraction of free water in white matter accurately using diffusion MRI acquisitions with a limited number of gradients at low b-values. The proposed method outperformed the existing methods based on mixtures of two Gaussians in terms of accuracy and precision, demonstrating the feasibility of obtaining reliable estimates of free-water fraction without introducing significant biases.

Brain charts for the human lifespan

Summary: Neuroimaging has become a widely used tool in brain research, but there is currently a lack of reference standards to quantify individual differences over time. In this study, researchers created an open resource that benchmarks brain morphology using a large dataset of MRI scans. The brain charts identified neurodevelopmental milestones and showed high individual stability and robustness to technical and methodological differences.

Development of high quality T1-weighted and diffusion tensor templates of the older adult brain in a common space

Yingjuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study introduced an iterative method for constructing T1w and DTI templates of the older adult brain, demonstrating that more iterations improve the characteristics and spatial matching of the resulting templates. The templates generated by the proposed method provided better delineation of brain structures, higher discriminability between tissues, and higher image sharpness near the cortex compared to templates generated with approaches employing multichannel registration.

Summary: The study reveals that advanced diffusion models provide sensitive measures of age-related microstructural changes in white matter, complementing and extending the conventional DTI contribution. Through linear mixed effects models and machine learning, the research assessed age trajectories in healthy individuals and compared the age prediction accuracy of different diffusion models, showing that advanced models performed similarly to conventional DTI.

Free-water diffusion tensor imaging improves the accuracy and sensitivity of white matter analysis in Alzheimer's disease

Summary: Standard DTI and FW-DTI both showed decreased FA in AD, but higher AxD and RD were observed with standard DTI. The FW index was significantly elevated in AD, emphasizing the impact of free water on standard DTI in neurodegenerative pathologies. FW-DTI provided improved consistency in DTI metrics related to WM integrity in Alzheimer's disease.

Reliability on multiband diffusion NODDI models: A test retest study on children and adults

Martina Lucignani et al.

Summary: The NODDI and Bingham-NODDI diffusion MRI models are powerful tools for estimating brain microstructure, but factors such as fitting algorithms, multiband acceleration, shell configuration, age, and hemisphere side can significantly impact model reliability. Higher acceleration factors generally lead to better reliability, while differences in shell configuration and fitting tools also play a role. Overall, the study shows that a 10-minute multi-shell diffusion MRI acquisition for NODDI can yield reliable results in white matter, emphasizing the sensitivity of the Bingham-NODDI model to true subject variability.
