Transcranial direct current stimulation versus intermittent theta-burst stimulation for the improvement of working memory performance

Lais B. Razza et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques (NIBS) on working memory performance in healthy participants. The results showed that intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) significantly improved response speed, while transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the combined protocol did not produce similar effects. In terms of safety, there were no serious adverse effects in any of the protocols.

Dynamic alterations of functional connectivity and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in patients with unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss

Yu-Ting Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed abnormal dynamic brain functional connectivity and dynamic low-frequency fluctuation in SSNHL patients, especially within the visual cortices. This suggests that SSNHL patients may undergo cross-modal plasticity and visual compensation, which may be closely related to the pathophysiology of SSNHL.

Neurovascular coupling mechanisms in health and neurovascular uncoupling in Alzheimer's disease

Winston M. Zhu et al.

Summary: To meet the metabolic demands of the brain, mechanisms have evolved to couple neuronal activity to vasodilation, increasing cerebral blood flow. The release of vasoactive molecules by neurons and astrocytes plays a key role in signaling pathways that induce vasodilation. Understanding neurovascular coupling is especially important in Alzheimer's disease, where disrupted cerebral blood flow regulation is a prominent feature.

Sensory experience modulates the reorganization of auditory regions for executive processing

Barbara Manini et al.

Summary: Using functional MRI, researchers found that deaf individuals specifically recruit 'auditory' regions during task switching, and neural activity in the superior temporal regions, especially in the right hemisphere, predicts behavioral performance in deaf individuals. This indicates that sensory cortices can adapt their function to higher-order cognition, suggesting that sensory experience influences cortical reorganization and executive processing in the brain.

High-Frequency Hearing Loss Is Associated With Anxiety and Brain Structural Plasticity in Older Adults

Wen Ma et al.

Summary: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a common condition in older adults, characterized by symmetrical and slow sensorineural hearing loss that starts from the high-frequency region and spreads towards the low-frequency region with age. Previous studies have linked ARHL to anxiety, suggesting a possible involvement of brain structure in compensatory plasticity after partial hearing deprivation. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the interactions among high-frequency hearing loss, anxiety, and brain structure in older adults. The results revealed a decrease in gray matter volume (GMV) in 20 brain regions in ARHL patients compared to normal hearing controls, with a positive correlation between high-frequency pure tone audiometry (H-PT) and anxiety scores in the ARHL group. Specifically, the middle cingulate cortex (MCC) and hippocampal/parahippocampal (H-P) regions were associated with H-PT and anxiety scores in all participants. However, there was no relationship between depressive symptoms and hearing assessment or GMVs. These findings highlight the crucial role of MCC and H-P in the link between anxiety and hearing loss in older adults.

Body Mass Index Trajectories Preceding Incident Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: This cohort study found that significantly lower BMI occurs approximately 7 years before the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among cognitively intact individuals. After MCI diagnosis, BMI declines at the same pace in people who develop dementia and those who do not. The presence of high brain pathologies may underlie the BMI decline preceding dementing disorders.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed treatment outcomes for 106 patients with acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL) and found that the combination of initial daily administration of <= 30 mg prednisolone plus diuretics is sufficient as the first-line treatment for ALHL. High-dose steroids and salvage intratympanic steroid injections could be considered as a second choice, but the predicted outcome may not be as good in comparison.

Summary: This study proposed a dynamic window approach with random length and position to extract participants' dynamic characteristics under different temporal terms, and utilized a linear support vector machine model to identify SSD patients and healthy controls. Findings indicated that FCs related to the frontoparietal, somatomotor, dorsal attention, limbic and default mode networks played significant roles in SSD patients.
