Estrous cycle contributes to state-dependent contextual fear in female rats

R. Shelby Blair et al.

Summary: The increased susceptibility of women to stress and trauma-related disorders compared to men suggests a role for ovarian hormones in modulating fear and anxiety. Recent research has shown that the progesterone metabolite ALLO can induce state-dependent contextual fear in male rats. In naturally cycling female rats, hormonal fluctuations during the estrous cycle phase can influence fear learning, but this state-dependence is not observed in ovariectomized rats.

Behavioral Expression of Contextual Fear in Male and Female Rats

Amanda S. Russo et al.

Summary: Biological sex affects the contextual fear conditioning and expression in rats, with males showing more freezing behavior during fear expression tests and exhibiting more defecation in a novel context. Fear-potentiated startle did not differ between sexes. Multiple measures of fear should be used when comparing fear responses between sexes.
