Olfaction, Cognitive Impairment, and PET Biomarkers in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Summary: Olfactory deficits are associated with mild cognitive impairment, amyloid-beta, and tau deposition among community-dwelling older adults. Poorer olfaction predicts incident MCI, and greater olfaction decline is linked to faster accumulation of A beta and tau in specific brain regions. Further investigations are needed to determine if olfaction can predict AD-related neurodegenerative changes.

Longitudinal associations between blood lysophosphatidylcholines and skeletal muscle mitochondrial function

Summary: This study found that lower baseline concentrations and faster decline in plasma lysophosphatidylcholines (LPCs) are associated with a faster decline in skeletal muscle mitochondrial function. Preventing the decline of plasma LPCs at an early stage may slow down the decline and impairment of mitochondrial function during aging.

The association between long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and changes in brain volumes among older community-dwelling Japanese people

Summary: This study investigated the association between the intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and arachidonic acid (ARA) and brain atrophy in non-demented older Japanese individuals. The results suggest that higher ARA intake is associated with a smaller decrease in frontal cortex volumes and a lower risk of cognitive decline. Additionally, in the subgroup with low DHA and EPA intake, DHA and EPA intake were positively correlated with the preservation of temporal cortex volume.
