Radiomics-based evaluation and possible characterization of dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) perfusion derived different sub-regions of Glioblastoma

Suhail Parvaze et al.

Summary: This study aims to characterize different tumor sub-regions derived from DCE perfusion MRI using routine 3D post-contrast-T1 (T1GD) and FLAIR images with the aid of Radiomics analysis. The results showed that Radiomics-based specific feature values and maps help to differentiate different tumor sub-regions. However, the GLDM_DependenceNonUniformity feature appears to be most specific for separating edema from the remaining tumor sub-regions using conventional FLAIR images.

Amine-weighted chemical exchange saturation transfer magnetic resonance imaging in brain tumors

Nicholas S. Cho et al.

Summary: Amine-weighted CEST MRI is a valuable imaging technique for brain tumors, sensitive to changes in amino acids and pH, and has the potential to greatly impact patients by understanding vulnerabilities in the tumor microenvironment and providing complementary value to conventional and exploratory therapies.

Metabolic delineation of IDH1 wild-type glioblastoma surgical anatomy: how to plan the tumor extent of resection

Roberto Altieri et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between anatomical and metabolic data and investigate the role of (11)C-methionine positron emission tomography ((11)[C]-MET PET) in providing additional information for preoperative planning of glioblastoma surgery. The study found a significant correlation between preoperative metabolic data and tumor volume. Therefore, (11)[C]-MET PET should be considered in surgical planning to achieve a Supra Total Resection (SupTR).

Conventional and Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Assessment of Non-Enhancing Peritumoral Area in Brain Tumor

Elisa Scola et al.

Summary: The non-enhancing peritumoral area (NEPA) is defined as the hyperintense region in T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images surrounding a brain tumor. NEPA analyses using conventional and advanced MRI techniques have shown promise in the differential diagnosis of brain tumors and predicting prognosis and treatment response. An update on this topic is needed due to the rapid technological advancements in advanced MRI imaging.

Novel 3D magnetic resonance fingerprinting radiomics in adult brain tumors: a feasibility study

Charit Tippareddy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the feasibility of using 3D MRF maps with radiomics analysis and machine learning in the characterization of adult brain intra-axial neoplasms. The results showed that MRF maps were able to differentiate tumors based on type, grade, and IDH1 status. Furthermore, the radiomics features of MRF maps can also characterize gliomas based on grade, IDH1 status, and survival.

A consensus definition of supratotal resection for anatomically distinct primary glioblastoma: an AANS/CNS Section on Tumors survey of neurosurgical oncologists

Maureen Rakovec et al.

Summary: There is a lack of consensus on the definition and appropriate use of Supratotal resection (SpTR) of glioblastoma. A survey was conducted among neurosurgical oncologists to gather opinions on the definition and potential clinical trial candidates for SpTR. The majority of neurosurgeons surveyed agreed on the definitions of SpTR as complete resection with removal of some non-contrast enhancement or resection 1-2 cm beyond contrast enhancement. Right anterior temporal and right frontal glioblastomas were identified as the most suitable candidates for clinical trials.

Three-Dimensional Arterial Spin Labeling-Guided Sub-Volume Segmentation of Radiotherapy in Adult Non-Enhancing Low-Grade Gliomas

Zihong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of sub-volume segmentation for radiotherapy planning of adult non-enhancing low-grade gliomas (NE-LGGs) guided by three-dimensional arterial spin labeling (3D-ASL). The differences in high- and low-perfusion areas of NE-LGGs were analyzed using multi-sequence magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics. The results showed that 3D-ASL can guide the radiotherapy planning for NE-LGGs.

Relapse patterns and radiation dose exposure in IDH wild-type glioblastoma at first radiographic recurrence following chemoradiation

Satoka Shidoh et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the radiation dose distribution and lesion morphometry in patients with glioblastoma. The study found that most GBMs recur within the therapeutic radiation doses, and tumors with longer progression-free survival were located further from the original tumor and had a more solid and/or nodular morphology.

Influence of phosphate concentration on amine, amide, and hydroxyl CEST contrast

Jingwen Yao et al.

Summary: The study found that the exchange rates of alpha-amine and hydroxyl protons are highly dependent on pH and phosphate concentrations, while the exchange rates of eta-amine and amide protons depend on pH but are not catalyzed by phosphate. Phosphate, predominantly intracellular, affects the CEST contrast of alpha-amine, showing higher sensitivity to changes in the extracellular microenvironment.

The blood-tumour barrier in cancer biology and therapy

Patricia S. Steeg

Summary: The blood-brain barrier plays a crucial role in maintaining normal brain function, but modifications in primary brain tumors and brain metastases result in the blood-tumor barrier, further limiting the penetration of therapeutic agents. This challenge highlights the importance of understanding and overcoming the structural and functional complexities of the blood-tumor barrier for improving cancer therapy and patient outcomes.
