Evolution of adsorption heights in the on-surface synthesis and decoupling of covalent organic networks on Ag(111) by normal-incidence X-ray standing wave

Lukas Grossmann et al.

Summary: NIXSW analysis allows precise measurement of adsorption heights, providing new perspectives on surface interactions and molecular conformations. The study of porous covalent triazine-phenylene networks on Ag(111) reveals the evolution of molecular conformations and adsorption heights during on-surface synthesis and post-synthetic decoupling.

Iodine-Doping-Induced Electronic Structure Tuning of Atomic Cobalt for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Jianbin Liu et al.

Summary: Iodine doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of single-atom catalysts, improving the catalytic activity of cobalt-nitrogen-carbon catalyst towards the hydrogen evolution reaction. The introduction of iodine dopants optimizes hydrogen adsorption and facilitates HER kinetics, providing an alternative strategy for enhancing SAC performance.

Controlled growth of ordered monolayers of N-heterocyclic carbenes on silicon

Martin Franz et al.

Summary: The study on the adsorption of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) on silicon reveals the formation of highly ordered monolayers with good thermal stability and strong work function reductions. The structure and ordering of the monolayers are controlled by the substrate geometry and reactivity, particularly by the NHC side groups. These findings pave the way for tailor-made organic functionalization of silicon surfaces and offer potential for new electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Self-assembly of N-heterocyclic carbenes on Au(111)

Alex Inayeh et al.

Summary: N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a promising alternative to sulfur-based ligands for self-assembly on gold surfaces, but there are still many unanswered questions about their behavior on surfaces. This study examines fundamental questions such as NHC orientation, mobility, and self-assembly by analyzing NHC overlayers on Au(111).

Benchmarking atomically defined AFM tips for chemical-selective imaging

Bertram Schulze Lammers et al.

Summary: Controlling the identity of the tip-terminating atom or molecule in low-temperature atomic force microscopy has led to significant advances in surface chemistry and nanotechnology. Comparing four atomically defined tips, it was found that Cu-tips react with surface oxygen, while Xe and CO tips allow for increased resolution due to their chemical inertness. CuOx-tips, with higher rigidity and selectively increased chemical reactivity, prevent tip-bending artifacts and generate a distinct chemical contrast, which holds promise for future studies on metal-oxide surfaces.
