Low CCR5 expression protects HIV-specific CD4+T cells of elite controllers from viral entry

Mathieu Claireaux et al.

Summary: Individuals who can naturally control HIV infection have lower levels of the viral co-receptor CCR5 in specific CD4 (+) T cells, which is due to mutations or receptor internalization. These individuals also maintain CD4 + T cells with high avidity for Gag antigens and potent effector functions. The downregulation of CCR5 in specific CD4 + T cells contributes to decreased susceptibility to CCR5-dependent HIV entry in these individuals.

How Does Epstein-Barr Virus Interact With Other Microbiomes in EBV-Driven Cancers?

Yuxi Wen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the role of the commensal microbiome in EBV infection and tumorigenesis. It highlights the importance of other components in the commensal microbiome in the development of EBV-driven cancers and the regulation of the host immune system through host-microbiota interactions. Additionally, the potential application of microbiome targeting strategies in the treatment of EBV-driven cancers is discussed.

HIV Co-infection Augments EBV-Induced Tumorigenesis in vivo

Christopher B. Whitehurst et al.

Summary: EBV infection is usually latent and asymptomatic in most individuals, but it can lead to the development of B cell lymphomas in immune suppressed individuals such as people living with HIV. This study used a humanized mouse model and found that HIV co-infection enhances EBV replication and immune activation, resulting in an increased risk of EBV-induced tumorigenesis. These findings suggest a direct effect of HIV co-infection on EBV pathogenesis and disease progression.

SARS-CoV-2 infection is effectively treated and prevented by EIDD-2801

Angela Wahl et al.

Summary: The study suggests that bats may be the source of coronaviruses that can be directly transmitted to humans. Using the LoM model, efficient replication of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and two SARS-like bat coronaviruses in human lung tissue was demonstrated. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 predominantly targets human lung epithelial cells and induces a sustained inflammatory response. The broad-spectrum antiviral agent EIDD-2801 significantly inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in vivo, showing potential for prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr Virus Coinfection Stimulates Aggressiveness in Gastric Cancer through the Regulation of Gankyrin

Dharmendra Kashyap et al.

Summary: Persistent coinfection with Helicobacter pylori and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) promotes aggressive gastric carcinoma. Coinfection creates a favorable microenvironment for higher pathogen-associated gene expression. The upregulation of oncogenic protein gankyrin plays a crucial role in enhancing the carcinogenic activity in gastric epithelial cells during coinfection with H. pylori and EBV.

Eliminating HIV reservoirs for a cure: the issue is in the tissue

Kathleen Busman-Sahay et al.

Summary: The advances in antiretroviral therapy have significantly improved the lives of HIV-1 patients, but the need for an HIV cure still remains due to challenges like lifelong adherence and viral reservoirs in tissues. Recent studies have focused on understanding and targeting HIV tissue viral reservoirs, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Exciting new techniques, like CRISPR, show promise in eliminating these reservoirs and moving closer towards an effective HIV cure.
