A spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscope in vector magnetic field

Lihui Zhou et al.

Summary: Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy with a high vector magnetic field is used to image surface magnetic structures, study anisotropic superconductivity, and explore spin physics in quantum materials. This paper describes the design, construction, and performance of a low-temperature, ultra-high-vacuum spectroscopic imaging STM with a vector magnet capable of applying a field of up to 3 T in any direction. The STM can operate at variable temperatures and is suitable for studying layered compounds and thin films.

Imaging gate-tunable Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids in 1H-MoSe2 mirror twin boundaries

Tiancong Zhu et al.

Summary: The authors used scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the mirror twin boundaries in single-layer 1H-MoSe2 devices. By adjusting the electron density, they successfully visualized the electronic structure of the mirror twin boundaries and confirmed the presence of density wave excitations and spin-charge separation effects, in agreement with the predictions of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory.

Gate-Tunable Resonance State and Screening Effects for Proton-Like Atomic Charge in Graphene

Mykola Telychko et al.

Summary: The successful creation of stable artificial atomic charge in a graphene lattice through ion implantation has been achieved. Experimental and computational studies have shown that the N dopant behaves as an in-plane proton-like charge, and the energy of the resonance state it produces is heavily renormalized at specific charge carrier densities.

Multiband superconductivity in strongly hybridized 1T′-WTe2/NbSe2 heterostructures

Wei Tao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the strongly proximity-coupled heterostructures of monolayer 1T'-WTe2 grown on NbSe2, revealing a hybrid electronic structure with multiband superconductivity induced by proximity to WTe2. A material-specific tight-binding model quantitatively captures the hybridized heterostructure and accurately predicts the induced order parameter in the WTe2 monolayer bulk. The detailed multiband analysis of the hybrid electronic structure provides a useful tool for spatial mapping of induced order parameters in atomically thin topological materials.

Design and characterization of a low-vibration laboratory with cylindrical inertia block geometry

Wenjie Gong et al.

Summary: Many modern nanofabrication and imaging techniques require an ultra-quiet environment for optimal resolution, achieved by isolating sensitive instruments on a massive block floating on air springs. Raising the flexural resonance frequencies above 120 Hz is advantageous due to typical building noise dropping off at that frequency, however, obtaining a high fundamental frequency with a rectangular design can be challenging. A cylindrical design has been shown to achieve higher fundamental resonance frequencies compared to a rectangular design of the same mass.

A millikelvin scanning tunneling microscope in ultra-high vacuum with adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration

Taner Esat et al.

Summary: The ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) utilizes adiabatic demagnetization for temperature control to achieve accurate operation at extremely low temperatures, offering long experiment times with high magnetic field capabilities. The setup also features a vibrationally isolated laboratory and a custom-built cryopump for mechanical stability during STM measurements on an Al(100) surface.
