Multifunctional coating on magnesium alloy: Superhydrophobic, self-healing, anti-corrosion and wear-resistant

Niumeng Huang et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic coating (SHC) was prepared on magnesium (Mg) alloy through sequential surface etching, in-situ growth of Mg-Al-layered double hydroxides (LDHs), and modification of octadecyl-trimethoxy-silane (OTMS). The fabricated SHC exhibited contact angles above 150 degrees and sliding angles below 10 degrees when exposed to acidic or alkaline solutions, such as HCl, NaOH, NaCl, as well as milk, cola, and tea. The SHC significantly improved lubrication and wear resistance compared to the bare Mg alloy. Furthermore, the corrosion of Mg alloy was greatly reduced by the SHC, which maintained long-term hydrophobicity even after immersion in NaCl solution for 6 weeks. Any scratches on the SHC could self-heal within 8 days by immersing in water, thanks to the hydrolytic polycondensation of silane and corrosion decomposition of LDHs.
