Synergistic Fe-Se Atom Pairs as Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts Boost Low-Temperature Rechargeable Zn-Air Battery

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, bifunctional electrocatalysts, Fe-Se/NC, were successfully constructed by synthesizing atomically dispersed Fe-Se atom pairs supported on N-doped carbon. The obtained Fe-Se/NC exhibited remarkable bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance with a low potential difference of 0.698 V, surpassing that of previously reported Fe-based single-atom catalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the p-d orbital hybridization around the Fe-Se atom pairs resulted in significantly asymmetrical polarized charge distributions. Moreover, Fe-Se/NC-based solid-state rechargeable Zn-air batteries demonstrated superior cycling and stability compared to the traditional Pt/C+Ir/C catalysts, even at extremely low temperatures.

The HER performance of 2D materials is underestimated without morphology correction

Jeyavelan Muthu et al.

Summary: 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDs) show significant variations in electrochemical performance due to differences in morphology. In this study, the limitations in homogeneous charge transfer of 2D-TMDs were identified as the main cause for variations in the hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Statistical electrochemical characterization was conducted on MoS2 and WS2 devices with compositional uniformity and controllable morphology. The results highlight the impact of morphology-dependent carrier transport on the electrochemical properties of 2D materials.

High-throughput screening of carbon-supported single metal atom catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Yiran Wang et al.

Summary: By utilizing density functional theory (DFT), this study investigated the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic properties of 180 types of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and found that the adsorption free energy of OH* serves as a universal descriptor for predicting ORR catalytic activity accurately. The research revealed that phthalocyanine, N-coordination graphene, and metal-organic frameworks exhibit relatively lower overpotentials, making them promising supports for single metal atom. Additionally, Co-doped metal-organic frameworks, Ir-doped phthalocyanine, Co-doped N-coordination graphene, Co-doped graphdiyne, and Rh-doped phthalocyanine show extremely low overpotentials comparable to Pt (111). This study provides valuable guidance for the design and selection of carbon-supported SACs for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Tunable metal hydroxide-organic frameworks for catalysing oxygen evolution

Shuai Yuan et al.

Summary: The oxygen evolution reaction plays a central role in the production of chemicals and energy carriers using electrons. Metal hydroxide-organic frameworks have been demonstrated to be a tunable catalytic platform for this reaction, with stability being dictated by π-π interactions and activity being modulated by transition metals. By combining the high tunability of enzymatic systems with known oxide-based catalysts, it is possible to achieve both high activity and stability. This study reports on the synthesis of metal hydroxide-organic frameworks that act as a tunable catalytic platform for the oxygen evolution reaction, with stability being determined by π-π interactions between adjacent stacked linkers and catalytic activity being influenced by the nature of transition metals in the hydroxides. Substituting Ni-based metal hydroxide-organic frameworks with acidic cations or electron-withdrawing linkers significantly enhances the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction, with Fe substitution achieving a mass activity of 80 A g(catalyst)(-1) at 0.3 V overpotential for 20 hours. Density functional theory calculations correlate the enhanced activity with the modulation of Ni redox and the optimized binding of oxygenated intermediates by the metal hydroxide-organic frameworks.

Carbon charge population and oxygen molecular transport regulated by program-doping for highly efficient 4e-ORR

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a crucial reaction in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation and fuel cells. Carbon, as a catalyst, shows potential to enhance the kinetics of ORR, but its intrinsic activity is under debate. This work explores the co-regulation of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) to control the charge population of carbon. It is found that electron-withdrawing configurations of N and thiophene-S lead to more positive charge distribution, while pyrrole-N acts as an electron-donor and disrupts charge delocalization. The study also demonstrates the enhancement of O-2 transfer by physical absorption and reaction consumption.
