Superstrong Carbon Nanotube Yarns by Developing Multiscale Bundle Structures on the Direct Spin-Line without Post-Treatment

Young Shik Cho et al.

Summary: By controlling the micro-textural structure through a bundle engineering process during direct spinning, carbon nanotube yarns (CNTYs) achieved a tensile strength of 5.5 N tex(-1). The development of multiscale bundle structures, from elementary bundles to secondary bundles, without any damage, significantly improved the mechanical performance of CNTYs.

High-performance carbon nanotube/polyaniline artificial yarn muscles working in biocompatible environments

Jian Qiao et al.

Summary: In this study, we report on the development of an implantable artificial muscle made by soaking-polymerization of polyaniline (PANI) inside a carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn. The yarn muscle generates a large contractile stroke and high isometric stress in aqueous biocompatible solutions, surpassing the performance of previously reported artificial yarn muscles. The CNT/PANI yarn muscles also exhibit excellent actuating performance in other biocompatible solutions, making them suitable for implantable bionic applications.

A novel aluminum-carbon nanotubes nanocomposite with doubled strength and preserved electrical conductivity

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: The mechanical strength of highly conductive pure metals is often improved at the expense of electrical conductivity. However, a study on pure aluminum/carbon nanotubes nanocomposites prepared by friction stir processing shows a significant increase in strength without compromising electrical conductivity. This is attributed to a clean and tightly bonded interface between the carbon nanotubes and aluminum.
