Dynamic semiconductor-electrolyte interface for sustainable solar water splitting over 600 hours under neutral conditions

Rui-Ting Gao et al.

Summary: Here we demonstrate a strategy to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of the BiVO4 photoanode in neutral electrolyte by in situ forming a NiB layer through the addition of nickel and borate species. The NiB/BiVO4 photoanode shows a high photocurrent density of 6.0 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and a photostability over 600 hours. The addition of Ni2+ inhibits the dissolution of NiB and improves the charge transfer, while borate species act as a promoter for catalyst activity. The synergy effect of both species suppresses charge recombination and photocorrosion of BiVO4.

Engineering BiVO4 and Oxygen Evolution Cocatalyst Interfaces with Rapid Hole Extraction for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Yingjuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Tailoring the OEC/BiVO4 interfaces with an HTL can effectively suppress charge recombination and achieve efficient PEC water splitting. By inserting Co3O4 nanoparticles between the NiOOH OEC and BiVO4 as the HTL, a champion photoanode achieves a high photocurrent density of 6.4 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs RHE under AM 1.5 G illumination. Stable PEC water splitting can be sustained for up to 90 hours. The strategy of forming p-n junctions between highly dispersed Co3O4 nanoparticles and BiVO4 can significantly improve charge separation and accelerate surface water oxidation kinetics.

One-step supramolecular preorganization constructed crinkly graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Songcan Wang et al.

Summary: A new one-step thermal polycondensation process is reported to produce crinkly graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CGCNNs) through supramolecular preorganization using a mixture of urea and melamine. Systematical studies show that the newly developed CGCNNs exhibit significantly enhanced optical absorption, widened bandgap, increased Hall mobility, and carrier density compared to its bulk counterpart, leading to a 7-fold improvement in photocatalytic hydrogen production rate. Na doping of CGCNNs further enhances its photocatalytic activity, resulting in an impressive hydrogen production rate approximately 10.5 times higher than its bulk counterpart, along with an apparent quantum efficiency of 19.12% at 420 nm.

Summary: This study focuses on the design and synthesis of tunable metallic glass for functional applications. The unique properties of the Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn metallic glass, determined by the varying oxygen affinities of the constituent elements, enable the homogeneous nucleation and uniform formation of metal oxides. The alloy design and hydrothermal synthesis play a crucial role in determining the characteristics of the metal oxides and the resulting nanostructures and photoelectrode properties. These findings provide a promising roadmap for the application of metallic glasses in photoelectrochemical solar water splitting and other potential areas.

Photodeposition of CoO x and MoS 2 on CdS as dual cocatalysts for photocatalytic H 2 production

Tingmin Di et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic H 2 production from water splitting has great potential in addressing energy and environmental issues. However, the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers hinders the efficiency and practical application of photocatalysis. In this study, noble-metal-free MoS 2 and CoO x cocatalysts were loaded on CdS nanorods using a two-step photodeposition method. The MoS 2 cocatalyst functions as a reduction agent to capture electrons, while the CoO x cocatalyst acts as an oxidation agent to capture holes. The results from TEM, ICP, XPS, and Mott-Schottky analysis confirm the effectiveness of the photodeposition method in loading the dual cocatalysts and their influence on the photochemical properties. The optimized CdS-MoS 2 -CoO x composite exhibits high photocatalytic H 2 -production rate and apparent quantum efficiency, attributed to the prolonged lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers and reduced charge recombination rates enabled by the dual cocatalysts. This work presents a facile and effective strategy for constructing highly efficient dual-cocatalyst-modified CdS photocatalysts for photocatalytic H 2 production.

Unveiling the effect of crystal facets on piezo-photocatalytic activity of BiVO4

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: This work investigates the role of crystal facet in the piezo-photocatalysis process through experiments and theoretical calculations. BiVO4 crystals with different facets were prepared and their piezocatalytic, photocatalytic, and piezo-photocatalytic activities were evaluated. The results show that different crystal facets have varying bandgaps, carrier concentrations, charge separation abilities, piezoelectric potentials, and reactant adsorption activities, which directly impact the catalytic performance. The piezo-photocatalysis exhibits higher performance compared to isolated catalysis, and the crystal facet with lower photocatalytic efficiency can be improved by its stronger built-in piezoelectric potential. These findings shed light on the facet-activity piezo-photocatalysis and provide an effective method for developing high-performance catalysts through facet engineering.
