Mercury chloride alters heterochromatin domain organization and nucleolar activity in mouse liver

Lorena Zannino et al.

Summary: Mercury is a highly toxic element that can cause severe health effects. Our study reveals that exposure to mercury chloride can induce changes in the nuclear architecture, heterochromatin domains, and nucleolar activity. These findings suggest that these modifications may play a role in counteracting the harmful effects of mercury and achieving a new equilibrium.

Genetics and Epigenetics of Manganese Toxicity

Sabrina Lindner et al.

Summary: This review examines the negative effects of manganese (Mn) exposure early in life on neurodevelopment and the potential genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying susceptibility to Mn toxicity. Studies suggest that common polymorphisms in Mn transporter genes, as well as genetic variation in iron regulatory genes, may influence intracellular Mn levels and neurotoxicity. Additionally, Mn exposure is associated with changes in DNA methylation, although the functional effects of these changes are still unknown. Further research is needed to better understand the role of genetics and epigenetics in Mn toxicity.

Lead exposure induces dysregulation of constitutive heterochromatin hallmarks in live cells

Oscar F. Sanchez et al.

Summary: Exposure to lead (Pb) leads to global changes in constitutive heterochromatin, as evidenced by lowered levels of DNA methylation and histone 3 lysine 9 trimethylation. These epigenetic changes may be attributed to aberrant transcriptional changes induced by Pb and could potentially cause long-term damage to chromatin structure.

Enhancer redundancy in development and disease

Evgeny Z. Kvon et al.

Summary: Shadow enhancers are redundant cis-regulatory elements that regulate the same gene and drive overlapping expression patterns. They play a crucial role in animal development, protecting gene expression from mutations and contributing to phenotypic robustness. Despite their apparent redundancy, shadow enhancers are evolutionarily conserved and key players in emerging gene regulatory networks in metazoans.
