Insight into the role of ionicity in the desalination and separation of a graphene oxide membrane

Mutsuki Oikawa et al.

Summary: This study systematically examines the separation behaviors of inorganic cations and dye molecules through GO membrane, and finds that the permeation rate and water flux increase linearly with the strength of cationic power. Furthermore, the study reveals the dominant ion-exchange mechanism and the important role of ionicity of solutes in the separation process. These findings provide valuable insights for membrane material design and water treatment applications.

Rational Design of MXene Hollow Fiber Membranes for Gas Separations

Yiming Zhang et al.

Summary: A scalable and easy dip-coating method was used to create a thin CO2-selection layer of Pebax/PEGDA-MXene on a hollow fiber PVDF substrate. The interlayer spacing of the MXene stacks in the coating was designed to be 3.59 angstrom, allowing efficient separation of CO2 from N2 and CH4. CO2-philic nanodomains were constructed in the layer to enhance CO2 affinity, while non-CO2-philic nanodomains promoted CO2 transport. The membrane showed excellent separation performance, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bounds limitation.

Pervaporation desalination with graphene oxide membranes: The influence of cation type and loading

K. E. Gurianov et al.

Summary: This paper reports the pervaporation desalination performance of graphene oxide (GO) membranes for salts solutions. The interlayer distance of GO expands upon ions absorption, leading to a decrease in water permeance. Carbon-based spacers can be used to improve membrane performance by increasing permeate flux.

Tunable order in colloids of hard magnetic hexaferrite nanoplatelets

Artem A. Eliseev et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural ordering in concentrated magnetic colloids containing hard magnetic disc-like nanoparticles and found that the homogeneous magnetic liquid consists of dynamic threads of stacked nanoparticles. The interparticle distance in the threads can be tuned by controlling particle charge and electric double layer screening. Permanent magnetic field does not affect structural changes, but alternating field draws particles apart.

Rapid Aging of Bilayer Graphene Oxide

Hu Lin et al.

Summary: This study uses atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the swelling of bilayer graphene oxide (GO) flakes in water and ethanol vapors. The results show that swelling can be used as an indicator of rapid aging of bilayered HGO, and that AFM can detect hole defects in GO sheets. Furthermore, the swelling behavior of bilayered GO depends on the storage conditions and material type.

The role of oxidation level in mass-transport properties and dehumidification performance of graphene oxide membranes

E. A. Chernova et al.

Summary: This study reports on gas and vapor transport properties of ultra-thin graphene oxide membranes with different C:O ratios. It was found that a decrease in C:O ratio leads to an increase in water vapor permeance and a slight reduction in permeance towards permanent gases. Experimental and modeling results show the decisive role of H2O diffusivity in GO membranes.

MXene-based gas separation membranes with sorption type selectivity

D. Petukhov et al.

Summary: The specific properties of O- and OH-terminated Ti3C2Tx nanosheets contribute to the permeance and sorption type selectivity of MXene membranes. These membranes demonstrate high separation factors and permeances for ammonia and water vapors, with strong sorption capacities and labyrinthine transport. The diffusion coefficient of strongly absorbed gases increases with pressure, and the interlayer distance expands, reducing activation barriers for hopping diffusion. Demonstrated characteristics make Ti3C2Tx nanosheets a promising candidate for developing ammonia selective membranes.

Swelling Pressures of Graphite Oxide and Graphene Oxide Membranes in Water and Ethanol

Artem Iakunkov et al.

Summary: The swelling of graphene oxide (GO) membranes and bulk graphite oxide under confinement conditions can produce high pressures, with differences observed in the pressure increase kinetics in water and ethanol. The swelling pressure is crucial for applications of GO membranes and can be used as an estimation for suction pressure in pervaporation or vapor permeation applications.
