Band Gap Narrowing in a High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Semiconductor for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Rowan R. Katzbaer et al.

Summary: High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with randomly mixed metal cations in a crystalline oxide lattice exhibit unique properties, including band gap narrowing in a high-entropy aluminate spinel oxide. The band gap narrowing arises from the broadening of the energy distribution of the 3d states due to variations in electronegativities and crystal field splitting. As a catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, high-entropy oxide A5Al2O4 outperforms single-metal end members but suffers from catalyst deactivation due to the formation of a passivating layer.

A high-entropy atomic environment converts inactive to active sites for electrocatalysis

Han Zhu et al.

Summary: By regulating the atomic environment of high-entropy-alloy (HEA) electrocatalysts, inactive sites can be transformed into active sites, leading to enhanced catalytic activity. A high-entropy FeCoNiCuMn HEA nanoparticle was synthesized by integrating low-electronegativity Mn and high-electronegativity Cu with Fe, Co, and Ni base metals, which facilitated the transformation of inactive Cu to electron-enriched active sites. This resulted in reduced adsorption energies of reactants, intermediates, and products, leading to improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The HEA exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity and cycling stability, surpassing Pt/C and IrO2 catalysts. This work represents a breakthrough in the design of advanced HEA electrocatalysts for complex reactions.

High-entropy alloy stabilized active Ir for highly efficient acidic oxygen evolution

Han Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a breakthrough in using high-entropy alloy (HEA) as substrates to stabilize active Ir at the nanoscale was reported. Fe, Co, Ni, and Ru were used as stabilizing structural elements. The FeCoNiIrRu HEA nanoparticles were synthesized in electrospun carbon nano-fibers (CNFs) and exhibited thermodynamic induced phase evolution. The FeCoNiIrRu/CNFs showed excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity with low overpotential and high mass activity. The hysteretic diffusion effect of HEA inhibited metal leaching and dissolution, leading to excellent durability. The OER performance could be optimized by changing metal compositions and calcination temperatures. In situ Raman spectra revealed the formation of intermediates on HEA NP surfaces. The redistribution of electron density in FeCoNiIrRu NPs promoted the conversion of *OOH and generation of O-2.
