The origin of human pathogenicity and biological interactions in Chaetothyriales

Yu Quan et al.

Summary: Fungi in the Chaetothyriales order, although not primary pathogens, have the ability to cause human infections. They exhibit extremotolerance and advanced toxin management, and their ancestral ecology involves association with metabolite-producing lichens. Ant-association and dealing with pheromones are also important aspects of this order. The Herpotrichiellaceae family, derived from phylogeny, shows dual ecology and the ability to cause disease in humans and cold-blooded vertebrates.

Photobiont Diversity in Lichen Symbioses From Extreme Environments

Roberto De Carolis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity of Trebouxia spp. associated with the lichen-forming fungi Rhizoplaca melanophthalma and Tephromela atra in montane habitats worldwide. The greatest diversity of Trebouxia species-level lineages was found in the altitudinal range of 1,000-2,500 m. A total of 10 distinct Trebouxia species-level lineages were identified, including one previously unrecognized lineage.

The yeast lichenosphere: high diversity of basidiomycetes from the lichens Tephromela atra and Rhizoplaca melanophthalma

Agnese Cometto et al.

Summary: Lichens are well-known examples of complex symbiotic associations between organisms from different Kingdoms. Microfungi, particularly basidiomycetous yeasts, establish diverse associations with lichen thalli. This study successfully isolated and cultured 76 new strains of basidiomycetous yeasts and identified their taxonomic classification through genetic analysis. The results showed that these yeasts exhibit host-preference in some cases and may be related to ecological conditions.

Gypsum content influences culturable soil fungal communities in semi-arid steppes from central Spain

S. Muriel et al.

Summary: Although gypsum outcrops are biodiversity hot-spots, the distribution and composition of soil fungal communities in relation to gypsum content is lacking. This study used fungal cultures to assess soil fungal composition and diversity in different gypsum soils from Central Spain. The results showed that species richness and diversity were not affected by soil gypsum concentration, but species composition varied in terms of presence and abundance.

Endolichenic Fungal Community Analysis by Pure Culture Isolation and Metabarcoding: A Case Study of Parmotrema tinctorum

Ji Ho Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the fungal community of endolichenic fungi (ELF) in lichens was compared using culture and metabarcoding analysis. Metabarcoding analysis showed higher diversity and different taxonomic proportions compared to culture-based analysis. The ELF community varied in different lichen segments and thalli. The number of fungal sequence reads required to predict ELF diversity was determined by analyzing the saturation patterns of OTU richness and sample coverage.

Tremella macrobasidiata and Tremella variae have abundant and widespread yeast stages in Lecanora lichens

Veera Tuovinen et al.

Summary: Dimorphism is a common feature of tremellalean fungi, with Tremella macrobasidiata and Tremella variae showing an abundant yeast stage in their life cycles associated with Lecanora lichens. The sexual filamentous stage is restricted to specific lichen species for each Tremella, while the yeast stage can be more versatile. This research suggests a wider distribution and abundance of lichen-associated Tremella than previously thought, prompting new questions about their biology and ecology in symbiosis.

Fungi Detected in the Previous Year's Leaf Petioles of Fraxinus excelsior and Their Antagonistic Potential against Hymenoscyphus fraxineus

Tadeusz Kowalski et al.

Summary: In 2017, a study on fungal communities in previous year's leaf petioles of Fraxinus excelsior found in litter in five ash stands in southern Poland was conducted. Fungi were identified through isolation and in situ inventory, revealing the diversity of harmful fungi affecting Fraxinus. The study discussed the possible contribution of saprotrophic fungi in limiting the expansion of Hymenoscyphus fraxineus in ash leaf petioles, which could lead to a reduction in the inoculum of ash dieback causal agent.

Sequence data from isolated lichen-associated melanized fungi enhance delimitation of two new lineages within Chaetothyriomycetidae

Lucia Muggia et al.

Summary: Lichen thalli provide a stable habitat for a wide range of microorganisms, including a diverse array of fungi. Members of the Eurotiomycetes and Dothideomycetes typically exist asymptomatically within lichen thalli and require DNA sequence data for taxonomic classification. Two new fungal lineages, Pleostigmataceae and Melanina, have been formally described, with the former showing a sister relationship to the Verrucariales order and the latter being placed within the Chaetothyriales.

Crittendenia gen. nov., a new lichenicolous lineage in the Agaricostilbomycetes (Pucciniomycotina), and a review of the biology, phylogeny and classification of lichenicolous heterobasidiomycetes

Ana M. Millanes et al.

Summary: This paper provides an introduction and review of lichenicolous 'heterobasidiomycetes' belonging in the Tremellomycetes and Pucciniomycotina, with a focus on recent studies and novelties of their classification, phylogeny, and evolution. Phylogenetic analyses reveal that the lichenicolous members of Chionosphaera form a monophyletic group in the Pucciniomycotina, leading to the description of the new genus Crittendenia to accommodate these species. Crittendenia, Cyphobasidium, and Lichenozyma are the only lichenicolous lineages known in the Pucciniomycotina.
