What Do the First 597 Global Fungal Red List Assessments Tell Us about the Threat Status of Fungi?

Gregory M. Mueller et al.

Summary: Fungal species are also vulnerable to the threats faced by animals and plants, and recent efforts have led to an increase in the number of published fungal assessments. The 597 assessed fungal species in the 2022-1 IUCN Red List update provide the first global review of the extinction risk and threats faced by fungi. Nearly 50% of the assessed species are threatened, with habitat loss/degradation, climate change, invasive species, and pollution identified as the primary threats.

Molecular-Based Diversity Studies and Field Surveys Are Not Mutually Exclusive: On the Importance of Integrated Methodologies in Mycological Research

Jonathan Cazabonne et al.

Summary: Understanding and describing the diversity of living organisms, particularly fungi, is challenging. While the study of fungal diversity has been revolutionized by modern molecular techniques, traditional field-based research is increasingly being neglected. This perspective emphasizes the central importance of field-based research in fungal diversity studies.

The haustorium as a driving force for speciation in thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes

Danny Haelewaters et al.

Summary: Laboulbeniomycetes is a class of fungi that have obligate associations with arthropod hosts, either for dispersal or as biotrophic parasites. This study focuses on the Herpomycetales and Laboulbeniales, presenting a One-Host-One-Parasite model for haustorial thallus-forming Laboulbeniomycetes. It discusses the importance of host specificity and microhabitat in governing host shifting, presence or absence of the fungus, abundance, effective host range, and geographic distribution. Suggestions for future research include fluorescent labeling of waxy lipids and mass spectrometry to evaluate the proposed hypothesis.

Laboulbeniomycetes: Intimate Fungal Associates of Arthropods

Danny Haelewaters et al.

Summary: Arthropod-fungus interactions involving Laboulbeniomycetes have been studied for centuries, with early uncertainties about their classification resolved through molecular phylogenetic studies. These filamentous Ascomycota are now understood to have intimate associations with their arthropod hosts, providing opportunities for further research in areas such as evolutionary biology and ecological relationships. Collaboration between mycologists and entomologists is crucial for advancements in understanding Laboulbeniomycetes and their interactions with hosts.

Bat-bat fly interactions in Central Panama: host traits relate to modularity in a highly specialised network

Thomas Hiller et al.

Summary: Network approaches are increasingly popular in studies of species interactions, with bat flies serving as an ideal model system. Research on bats in Central Panama revealed the high host-specificity of bat flies, which could potentially lead to their extinction in changing environments.
