The Sherwood-Relics simulations: overview and impact of patchy reionization and pressure smoothing on the intergalactic medium

Ewald Puchwein et al.

Summary: We introduce the Sherwood-Relics simulations, which are a new set of large cosmological hydrodynamical simulations designed to model the intergalactic medium (IGM) during and after the cosmic reionization of hydrogen. This suite includes over 200 simulations covering a wide range of astrophysical and cosmological parameters, and incorporates a new lightweight hybrid scheme for handling radiative transfer effects. Using this hybrid technique, we investigate the impact of patchy cosmic reionization on the spatial fluctuations in IGM properties, and find that it causes long-lasting temperature fluctuations and increases the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum on large scales.

Compressing the Cosmological Information in One-dimensional Correlations of the Lyα Forest

Christian Pedersen et al.

Summary: Observations of the Ly alpha forest from spectroscopic surveys provide a unique way to study structure growth on large scales. However, interpreting these measurements is complex due to the need for hydrodynamical simulations and marginalization over the intergalactic medium's properties. This study demonstrates that the cosmological information in the Ly alpha forest's one-dimensional power spectrum can be compressed into a two-parameter likelihood, without significant loss of constraining power.

A framework to measure the properties of intergalactic metal systems with two-point flux statistics

Naim Goksel Karacayli et al.

Summary: Measuring the abundance, temperature, and clustering of metals in the intergalactic medium is crucial for understanding the cosmic evolution and its impact on cosmological analysis with the Ly alpha forest. Existing methods tend to provide biased results, and hence, we propose an alternative approach that utilizes two-point statistics to measure these properties in an unbiased manner. Our initial results, based on data from DESI and high-resolution spectra, indicate evidence for higher C IV abundance and abundance evolution over time. The future use of DESI data will allow us to further investigate the growth of clustering and test DESI analysis infrastructure.

Performance of the Quasar Spectral Templates for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

Allyson Brodzeller et al.

Summary: The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will collect millions of quasar spectra, increasing the known number of quasars fourfold. Accurate classification is important for examining cosmological parameters at high redshifts observed by DESI. Spectral templates have been developed for identifying and estimating redshifts of quasars in DESI Year 1 data release. These templates, trained on Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra, can identify DESI quasars within the range of 0.05 < z < 7.0, and show significant improvements in failure rates, precision and accuracy of redshifts, completeness, and contamination fraction compared to previous DESI quasar templates.

Optimal 1D Lyα forest power spectrum estimation - II. KODIAQ, SQUAD, and XQ-100

Naim Goksel Karacayli et al.

Summary: The study measured the 1D Ly alpha power spectrum using the optimal quadratic estimator, combining two databases and performing a separate estimation to control resolution corrections. The analysis found that small-scale modes are sensitive to the thermal state and reionization history of the intergalactic medium, as well as the nature of dark matter, with significant improvements in sensitivity.

Metal Lines Associated with the Lyα Forest from eBOSS Data

Li Yang et al.

Summary: We investigate the metal species associated with the Ly alpha forest in eBOSS quasar spectra. Up to 13 metal species are identified as being associated with relatively strong Ly alpha absorbers over a specific redshift range. The measurements provide inputs for modeling the metal contamination in the Ly alpha forest and can further elucidate the physical conditions of these absorbers.

An emulator for the Lyman-α forest in beyond-ΛCDM cosmologies

Christian Pedersen et al.

Summary: Interpreting observations of the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum requires interpolation between simulations. A Gaussian process emulator has been presented to model the 1D flux power spectrum, enabling predictions in extended cosmological models without the need for bespoke emulators. This approach is suitable for cosmologies where the linear matter power spectrum is accurately described by an amplitude and slope across a specific epoch, and in the regime probed by eBOSS/DESI data.

Damped Lyman-α absorbers from Sloan digital sky survey DR16Q with Gaussian processes

Summary: This study introduces a new catalogue of DLAs, estimates their statistical properties using Gaussian process models, and demonstrates unbiased probabilistic predictions of DLA population statistics even with noisy data. The results are consistent with previous measurements and the new model is shown to be able to measure DLA population statistics even in the Lyman-beta forest region.

A consistent and robust measurement of the thermal state of the IGM at 2 ≤ z ≤ 4 from α large sample of Lya forest spectra: evidence for late and rapid He II reionization

Prakash Gaikwad et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the thermal state of the intergalactic medium at redshifts between 2 and 4 using high-resolution Lyα forest spectra. The measurements show a peak in temperature at mean density and a minimum slope in the temperature-density relation expected from He II reionization. Different flux statistics agree well and suggest a rapid thermal evolution of the IGM with peak temperature occurring around redshift z≈3. Different UV-background models predict varying thermal states, with some models aligning well with the observed rapid thermal evolution.
