Filament collapse: a two phase process

Elena Hoemann et al.

Summary: Using numerical simulations, this study investigates the gravitational evolution of filamentary molecular cloud structures and their condensation into dense protostellar cores. The collapse process is described in two distinct phases, with the first phase dominated by self-gravity and the second phase balanced by the ram pressure from inside material. This approach reproduces the established collapse time of uniform density filaments and agrees well with hydrodynamic simulations.

Taking off the edge - simultaneous filament and end core formation

S. Heigl et al.

Summary: Simulations show that the growth of core in star-forming filaments is influenced by a mechanism that slows down the growth of end cores. This mechanism involves the formation of a density gradient outside the cores, which reduces the gravitational acceleration, thereby preventing the end cores from dominating over other core formation modes.

Dissecting the Supercritical Filaments Embedded in the 0.5 pc Subsonic Region of Barnard 5

Anika Schmiedeke et al.

Summary: The study focuses on two filamentary structures in the subsonic region of Barnard 5, revealing their highly supercritical nature and the necessity of a strong magnetic field to resist radial collapse. Additionally, an anticorrelation between filament width and central density suggests contraction behavior.

Merging filaments I: a race against collapse

Elena Hoemann et al.

Summary: The study explores the complex structures and possible filament merging mechanisms in the interstellar medium, revealing that mergers are likely among closely spaced filaments. An analytic formula for merging and core-formation time-scale at the edge was developed and validated through hydrodynamical simulations. This allows for predicting the outcomes of filament mergers based on different initial conditions.
