Calibration of neutron star natal kick velocities to isolated pulsar observations

Veome Kapil et al.

Summary: Current prescriptions for supernova natal kicks in rapid binary population synthesis simulations are based on fits of simple functions to single pulsar velocity data. We propose a new parametrization of natal kicks received by neutron stars in isolated and binary systems, taking into account physical correlations between progenitor properties, remnant mass, and kick velocity. By constraining free parameters in this model using velocity measurements of Galactic single pulsars, we find that the inferred values of natal kick parameters are similar in single and binary evolution scenarios. The best-fitting values for these parameters are v(ns) = 520 km s(-1) for the scaling prefactor of neutron star kicks, and sigma(ns) = 0.3 for the fractional stochastic scatter in kick velocities.

An X-Ray-dim Isolated Neutron Star in a Binary?

Jie Lin et al.

Summary: We have discovered a dark companion with a 6.14 hour orbital period to 2MASS J15274848+3536572. Through observations and modeling, we determined that the dark companion has a mass of 0.98 +/- 0.03 M(circle dot) and is likely a main-sequence K9-M0 star. The presence of extra-peaked H alpha emission suggests the presence of an accretion disk. It is possible that the dark companion is a neutron star, although no radio pulsations or single pulse have been detected.

An empirical model of the Gaia DR3 selection function

Summary: This study aims to empirically quantify the completeness of Gaia's third data release (DR3) catalogue and develops a simple completeness model that takes into account specific factors of the optical survey. By testing the model's predictions against observational data, it is found that the model can accurately predict Gaia's completeness across the entire sky.

A Sun-like star orbiting a black hole

Kareem El-Badry et al.

Summary: We have discovered a bright and nearby Sun-like star orbiting a dark object. The system has been identified as a black hole candidate through astrometric orbital analysis from the Gaia mission. The modeling of radial velocities and astrometry provides constraints on the companion mass, and the spectroscopic orbit sets a minimum companion mass. This discovery suggests the existence of a sizable population of dormant black holes in binaries.

An observationally derived kick distribution for neutron stars in binary systems

Summary: Understanding the natal kicks received by neutron stars (NSs) during formation is crucial for modeling the evolution of massive binaries. In this study, we present a binary kick distribution for NSs with low-mass companions and discuss its implications on system formation. We provide a parametric model for future theoretical modeling work.

Astrometric excess noise in Gaia EDR3 and the search for X-ray binaries

P. Gandhi et al.

Summary: Astrometric noise combined with X-ray selection is used to identify accreting binaries in large surveys. By cross-matching the Gaia EDR3 catalogue with the Chandra Source Catalogue, a sample of approximately 6500 X-ray sources with significant astrometric noise is obtained. The X-ray detection efficiency for objects with significant noise is about 4.5 times higher than for objects with low noise. These objects, with significant noise, show distinct characteristics in color-magnitude space and include a higher fraction of known binaries, variables, and young stellar objects.

Summary: Stellar distances are essential in astrophysics, and the publication of 1.47 billion stellar parallaxes from Gaia significantly contributes to this field. Despite challenges with faint or distant stars, a probabilistic approach using a three-dimensional model of the Galaxy has been developed to estimate geometric and photogeometric distances. Photogeometric estimates generally show higher accuracy and precision compared to geometric distances, especially for stars with poor parallaxes, and are provided in a publicly available catalog.

Cygnus X-1 contains a 21-solar mass black hole-Implications for massive star winds

James C. A. Miller-Jones et al.

Summary: The evolution of massive stars is influenced by mass lost to stellar winds, which ultimately impact the masses of stellar remnants, such as black holes. A study using radio astrometry to refine the distance to the black hole x-ray binary Cygnus X-1 found the black hole mass to be 21.2 solar masses, higher than previous measurements. Formation of such high-mass black holes in high-metallicity systems within the Milky Way constraints wind mass loss from massive stars.
