The impact of coronal mass ejections and flares on the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HD189733b

Gopal Hazra et al.

Summary: High-energy stellar irradiation can evaporate planetary atmospheres, and the temporal variation in evaporation may be influenced by flares, CMEs, or both. In this study, radiation hydrodynamic simulations were used to investigate the impact of flares, winds, and CMEs on the atmosphere of HD189733b. The results show that flares only slightly increase the evaporation rate, while CMEs significantly enhance it. Additionally, the observed high blueshifted velocities in the Ly alpha line cannot be fully explained by flares alone, but CMEs can contribute to the enhanced blueshifted transit depths.

The Drivers of the Martian Bow Shock Location: A Statistical Analysis of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN and Mars Express Observations

P. Garnier et al.

Summary: The interaction between Mars and the solar wind leads to the formation of a bow shock in front of the planet. This study compares the influence of different factors on the shock location, such as extreme ultraviolet fluxes, magnetosonic Mach number, crustal magnetic fields, solar wind dynamic pressure, and Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) parameters. The results show that extreme ultraviolet fluxes and magnetosonic Mach number are the major drivers of the shock location, while crustal fields and solar wind dynamic pressure are secondary drivers.

Space-weather-driven Variations in Lyα Absorption Signatures of Exoplanet Atmospheric Escape: MHD Simulations and the Case of AU Mic b

Ofer Cohen et al.

Summary: We simulate the space environment and the interaction between the magnetized stellar wind and a planetary atmospheric outflow. We find that the Ly alpha absorption is highly variable due to the varying stellar wind conditions. The strong Doppler blueshift is likely attributed to the stellar wind rather than the escaping neutral atmosphere.

MHD Study of Extreme Space Weather Conditions for Exoplanets With Earth-Like Magnetospheres: On Habitability Conditions and Radio-Emission

J. Varela et al.

Summary: The present study aims to characterize the habitability conditions and radio emission features of exoplanets with an Earth-like magnetosphere. The study suggests that exoplanets hosted by M stars or with a stronger magnetic field and farther distance from F stars can be protected from stellar wind and space weather conditions. In addition, the radio emission signal can serve as an indicator of exoplanet habitability.

GJ 436b and the stellar wind interaction: simulations constraints using Ly α and H α transits

Carolina Villarreal D'Angelo et al.

Summary: The GJ 436 planetary system is remarkable, with simulations suggesting a set of parameters that best fit observational data regarding the interaction of the stellar wind and the escaping planetary atmosphere. Absorption in the H α line was not significant in any models explored, consistent with observations.

The effects of magnetic fields on observational signatures of atmospheric escape in exoplanets: Double tail structures

S. Carolan et al.

Summary: The study reveals the significant impact of magnetic fields on the observational signatures of atmospheric escape in exoplanets, leading to polar outflows and a double tail structure. While there is a slight increase in escape rate with dipole field strength, it does not affect the timescale of atmospheric loss. Atmospheric escape in magnetized planets occurs through polar outflows, contrasting to non-magnetized models where predominantly night-side escape is observed.

Evolution of Earth-like extended exospheres orbiting solar-like stars

Ada Canet et al.

Summary: Recent observations have shown the presence of extended hydrogenic components in the Earth's exosphere, potentially also present around Earth-like exoplanets, which plays a crucial role in determining habitability. The survival and dynamics of these hydrogen-rich extended exospheres are highly dependent on the planetary environment, influenced primarily by ionizing radiation and plasma winds from the host star.

Stellar Winds Drive Strong Variations in Exoplanet Evaporative Outflow Patterns and Transit Absorption Signatures

Laura M. Harbach et al.

Summary: Research suggests that interactions between stellar winds and planets can impact the acceleration and advection of planetary atmospheric outflows, resulting in a diverse range of planetary magnetosphere morphologies and plasma distributions. Local wind conditions have a significant impact on potential hydrogen Ly alpha observations of planetary atmospheres during transits, with observational signatures subject to considerable variation on short timescales. These findings indicate that observed variations in exoplanet transit signatures could be explained by wind-outflow interactions.

¶The impact of intrinsic magnetic field on the absorption signatures of elements probing the upper atmosphere of HD209458b

M. L. Khodachenko et al.

Summary: Observations and simulations of the expanding atmosphere of HD209458b show that the planetary magnetic field significantly affects the outflow of atmospheric material and related absorption features. Additionally, the formation of the planetary magnetosphere in the stellar wind is more influenced by the escaping atmosphere flow rather than the strength of the magnetic field. Fitting simulation results to observations helps constrain stellar XUV flux, He abundance, and set an upper limit for the dipole magnetic field on the planetary surface.

Effects of the stellar wind on the Ly α transit of close-in planets

S. Carolan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that increasing the strength of the stellar wind can reduce atmospheric escape in hot Jupiter and warm Neptune, affecting Ly alpha transits in a non-linear way. The interaction between the stellar wind and planetary atmosphere deepens with stronger wind, leading to changes in transit absorptions and potential underestimation of planetary escape rates if neglected.

Summary: Through a series of simulations, we have found that the interaction between the planetary atmosphere and the stellar wind in the GJ 436 planetary system, as well as the variations in parameters, have different impacts on the observational data. The mass-loss rates of the star and planet, as well as parameters such as stellar wind velocity and temperature, have different effects on Lyα and Ha transits.
