Rapidly alternating flux states of GX 339-4 during its 2021 outburst captured by Insight-HXMT

Honghui Liu et al.

Summary: The low-mass X-ray binary GX 339-4 underwent a new outburst in 2021, during which the flux rapidly alternated between low and high states. Time-resolved spectral analysis revealed that the flux changes occurred primarily in the hard X-ray band. The variability was attributed to the reflected emission from the inner accretion disc and the power-law continuum from the corona.

Evolution of the truncated disc and inner hot-flow of GX 339-4

P. Chainakun et al.

Summary: The study analyzes changes in the geometry of the truncated disc and inner hot-flow of GX 339-4 through the power spectral density (PSD) extracted from XMM-Newton observations. A theoretical model successfully produces bumpy PSD profiles and fits the data well, finding that the truncation radius and size of hot-flow zones increase as the luminosity decreases.

Observational Constraints on Black Hole Spin

Christopher S. Reynolds

Summary: The spin of black holes is a crucial aspect to understanding their formation, growth, and energy sources. Current techniques can detect and measure spins at various accretion rates, revealing rapidly spinning supermassive and stellar-mass black holes. Advances in gravitational wave astronomy have provided new insights into spin effects of merging binary black holes, showing a diversity in formation mechanisms between different populations of black holes.
