The impact of the first galaxies on cosmic dawn and reionization

Julian B. Munoz et al.

Summary: This research introduces the formation process of the first galaxies during cosmic dawn and reionization, and demonstrates the use of the 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen to map these cosmic milestones and study the galaxies involved. The study upgrades the publicly available code 21cmFAST, introducing a new parametrization method to interpret the observations, and performs a large-scale simulation to improve the previous model by reproducing the observed UV luminosity functions and including a population of molecular-cooling galaxies.

Streaming velocity effects on the post-reionization 21-cm baryon acoustic oscillation signal

Heyang Long et al.

Summary: The relative velocity between baryons and dark matter affects the formation of small-scale baryonic structures and the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale after reionization. This 'streaming velocity' reduces the abundance of pre-existing mini-haloes and modulates the reionization history. The study shows that the streaming velocity stretches the BAO scale and shifts the peaks to lower frequencies.

Effect of the cosmological transition to metal-enriched star formation on the hydrogen 21-cm signal

Mattis Magg et al.

Summary: The study developed a flexible semi-analytical model to track the formation of the first stars and the transition from primordial to metal-enriched star formation. It was found that the recovery time has a strong impact on the redshift at which the transition to metal-enriched star formation occurs, leaving a distinct imprint in the 21-cm signal.

The Supersonic Project: SIGOs, A Proposed Progenitor to Globular Clusters, and Their Connections to Gravitational-wave Anisotropies

William Lake et al.

Summary: Supersonically induced gas objects (SIGOs) are structures without much dark matter component in regions of the universe with large relative velocities between baryons and dark matter, possibly progenitors of modern globular clusters. By using perturbation theory and comparing analytic predictions with numerical simulations, the large-scale variation of SIGO abundances can be extrapolated. The expected number density of SIGOs is found to be consistent with observed globular cluster densities, and they may imprint an anisotropy on the gravitational wave signal in the sky.

The influence of streaming velocities and Lyman-Werner radiation on the formation of the first stars

Anna T. P. Schauer et al.

Summary: Population III star formation occurs in small dark matter minihaloes with specific conditions for H-2 cooling. The minimum mass scale for this formation is influenced by baryon streaming relative to dark matter and photodissociation of H-2 by a high redshift LW background. Results from high resolution cosmological simulations show that these effects are additive and impact M-min and M-ave.

The Supersonic Project: To Cool or Not to Cool Supersonically Induced Gas Objects (SIGOs)?

Yeou S. Chiou et al.

Summary: SIGOs primarily form in the early universe outside of dark matter halos due to relative stream velocity between baryons and dark matter. The properties of SIGOs are determined by gravitational interactions rather than cooling, with their low temperature and high gas density providing a nurturing ground for the earliest star formation sites.
