Thermal protection materials based on epoxy-containing and phenyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane modified phenolic resin and phenolic resin/carbon fiber composites

Fan Yang et al.

Summary: Epoxy-containing and phenyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (EP-POSS) and EP-POSS modified phenolic resin (PR) were investigated. The results demonstrate that EP-POSS effectively enhances the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and ablative performance of PR. During the ablative process, EP-POSS decomposition forms a protective silica layer, which reduces the erosion of the internal material by high temperature heat flow and effectively decreases the ablative rate. EP-POSS modified PR/CF (carbon fiber) composite with excellent ablative resistance and a near-zero linear ablative rate was also studied.

Metal Ion-Catalyzed Low-Temperature Curing of Urushiol-Based Polybenzoxazine

Wen Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, urushiol-based polybenzoxazine was cured at low temperature using Lewis acids (FeCl3, AlCl3, and CuCl2) instead of high thermal curing temperature. The impact of Lewis acids on the structures and properties of the polymers was investigated. The synthesized urushiol-based benzoxazine monomer (BZ) was reacted with Lewis acids at a molar ratio of 6:1 (N-monomer: N-Metal) at 80 degrees C to obtain films that can be cured at room temperature. The chemical structures of benzoxazine monomers were characterized using FTIR and H-1 NMR. The interaction between the metal ion and the polymers was revealed using XPS and ATR-FTIR. The effect of Lewis acids on the mechanical properties, wettability, and thermal stability of the polymers was studied. The results indicate that benzoxazine cured by Cu2+ exhibited better performance compared to Al3+ and Fe3+cured benzoxazine.

Summary: In this study, a functionalized double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) cage was synthesized, and it was found that this cage structure could significantly enhance the thermal decomposition temperature and char yield. Furthermore, blending epoxy resin with the DDSQ-BMI cage improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the epoxy resin due to the formation of an organic/inorganic network structure and the hydrogen bonding effect.

Polybenzoxazine aerogels created in Lewis acid catalysis for thermal insulation matrix in deep space exploration

Sizhao Zhang et al.

Summary: Polybenzoxazine aerogel is a new polymer aerogel material that can achieve crosslinked three-dimensional network structure through the ring-opening polymerization of benzoxazine monomer. By introducing Lewis acid as the catalyst and controlling the mixed ratio of Lewis acid and hydrochloric acid, low-density and self-extinguishing nanopomus polybenzoxazine aerogels have been fabricated. These aerogels exhibit a good three-dimensional nanopore network structure, remarkable self-extinguishing performance, low density, and excellent mechanical properties, showing potential for broad application in the aerospace field.
