Aggregation-induced emission active salicylaldehyde hydrazone with multipurpose sensing applications

Dhvani A. Patel et al.

Summary: In this study, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of a Schiff base salicylaldehyde hydrazone (SH) in DMSO-HEPES mixed solvents was investigated. The non-fluorescent SH in pure DMSO exhibited highly yellow-luminescent behavior when the HEPES fraction reached >= 70% in DMSO. UV-vis, DLS, and SEM investigations confirmed the formation of self-aggregates of SH, which inhibited intramolecular rotation and activated the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism for yellow fluorescence emission. The AIEgen SH was successfully applied for the sensing of cations, aldehydes, and nitroaromatics, as well as for the visualization of latent fingerprints.

Carbazole-hydrazinobenzothiazole a selective turn-on fluorescent sensor for Hg2+ ions - Its protein binding and electrochemical application studies

Denzil Britto Christopher Leslee et al.

Summary: The sensor CBT-1 has been successfully synthesized and demonstrated selective detection of Hg2+ ions in a pool of different metal ions through colorimetric and fluorimetric changes. The study further investigated the sensing mechanism and protein binding interaction, as well as the potential electrochemical sensing ability of CBT-1 in detecting Hg2+ ions through various analytical techniques.

Enzyme modified CNTs for biosensing application: Opportunities and challenges

Meenakshi Pundir et al.

Summary: The development of carbon nano tubes (CNTs) based biosensors is driven by their considerable biocompatibility, prospect of engineering the surface as per the deliberated application, and high accuracy of the results. Enzyme immobilization is a key technology to improve the recyclability of enzymes, and research focuses on enzyme immobilization on engineered CNTs and their applications in analyte detection, as well as the latest advances in enzyme-less detection techniques and associated challenges.

Luminescent metal nanoclusters: Biosensing strategies and bioimaging applications

Yan Xiao et al.

Summary: Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are small metal-organic aggregates with molecule-like properties, particularly strong and bright luminescence, making them useful in biosensing and bioimaging applications. Aggregation-induced emission is a feasible mechanism for controlling the luminescence of MNCs. Despite the lack of a systematic summary in current literature, research on the design and practicality of luminescent MNCs for biomedical applications is advancing.

Ratiometric sensing of Zn2+ with a new benzothiazole-based fluorescent sensor and living cell imaging

Qi Wu et al.

Summary: A new fluorescent probe, BTT, was reported for ratiometric sensing of Zn2+ ions in methanol/HEPES buffer solution, showing a clear emission change and color change in the presence of Zn2+. The probe has a limit of detection for Zn2+ quantitation down to 37.7 nM and can image both exogenous and endogenous Zn2+ ions in cells.

An asymmetric Schiff base-functionalized gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric sensor for Hg2+ ion determination: experimental and DFT studies

Fereshteh Amourizi et al.

Summary: A colorimetric sensor using surface-modified gold nanoparticles for detecting Hg2+ ions was reported, with Schiff base ligands as electron transfer agents commonly used for heavy metal ion determination. The affinity of Hg2+ ions towards bidentate Schiff base on GNPs supports the development of selective sensors, and the optimized structures and binding mechanisms were confirmed through spectroscopy and DFT calculations. These simple colorimetric tests can be extended for rapid pre-screening of heavy metal ions for onsite detection and mitigation.
