Equivalent and Complement of the ω-Bonding Model and Charge-Shift Bonding Model: A Natural Bond Orbital/Natural Resonance Theory/Atoms in Molecules Investigation via Cu/Ag/Au Bonding in BMX (B = H2O, H2S, NH3, and PH3; M = Cu, Ag, and Au; and X = F, Cl, Br, and I)

Junjie Song et al.

Summary: Chemical bonding serves as the language of logic for chemists. Two new resonance bonding models, omega-bonding and charge-shift (CS) bonding, are gaining popularity. This study investigated the Cu/Ag/Au bonding in BMX (B = H2O, H2S, NH3, and PH3; M = Cu, Ag, and Au; and X = F, Cl, Br, and I) complexes using various analysis methods. The findings demonstrate that the Cu/Ag/Au bonds exhibit characteristics of both omega-bonding and CS bonding, and these models are equivalent and complementary in understanding the bonding. The implication of the omega symbol in the omega-bonding model is also noteworthy. These findings contribute to better communication and understanding of CS bonding in similar omega-bonded complexes.

On the Nature of the Bonding in Coinage Metal Halides

Sladana Dordevic et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the nature of the chemical bond in coinage metal halides using high-level ab initio Valence Bond (VB) theory. The bonds are found to have a large Charge-Shift Bonding character, which is attributed to the interaction between the bond pair and the filled semicore d shell of the metal, resulting in a significant Pauli pressure. Gold-halide bonds are pure Charge-Shift Bonds (CSBs), copper halides are polar-covalent bonds, and silver halides lie in between. Fluorine exhibits the highest CSB character due to the largest Pauli pressure exerted by its sigma lone pair. Additionally, all these bonds demonstrate a secondary but non-negligible pi bonding character, which is quantified in the VB calculations.

Nature of the Trigger Linkage in Explosive Materials Is a Charge-Shift Bond

Jyothish Joy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of X-NO2 bonds in nitro explosives, revealing that these bonds are mainly stabilized by covalent-ionic resonance as charge-shift bonds (CSBs). The Pauli repulsion in nitro explosives is traced back to hyperconjugative interactions, weakening the X-NO2 bond and increasing sensitivity to detonation. The connection between bond-weakening and surface-electrostatic potential diagnosis in trigger bonds is established.

An Assessment of Radial Potential Functions for the Halogen Bond: Pseudo-Diatomic Models for Axially Symmetric Complexes B...ClF (B=N2, CO, PH3, HCN, and NH3)

Anthony C. Legon

Summary: The study investigates the radial potential energy of five axially symmetric halogen-bonded complexes at different intermolecular distances, calculating related spectroscopic constants and stretching modes. Different isomers and structural differences among the complexes are discussed using polynomial fitting and H-H function.

Astatine Facing Janus: Halogen Bonding vs. Charge-Shift Bonding

Serigne Sarr et al.

Summary: The study investigated halogen-bond interactions from the perspective of astatine, revealing that despite the stronger polarizability of astatine, halogen bonds formed by C6At6 may be comparable or weaker than those of C6I6 due to the charge-shift bonding character. This unexpected finding demonstrates that the At-mediated interactions can be weaker than their iodinated counterparts.
