Anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities of flavone C-glycosides of Lophatherum gracile for COVID-19

Yu-Li Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that flavone C-glycosides in Lophatherum gracile are the main active components with anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. They developed a simple chromatography-based method to extract flavone C-glycoside-enriched extract and demonstrated its ability to inhibit respiratory bursts and neutrophil extracellular trap formation. Additionally, the extract was shown to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus infection by interfering with the binding of the spike protein to ACE2.

Recent Developments in Polyphenol Applications on Human Health: A Review with Current Knowledge

Nikheel Bhojraj Rathod et al.

Summary: Polyphenol has diverse health promoting properties, including antioxidative, antihypertensive, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer activity. The application of polyphenols in the food industry as bio-preservatives can inhibit oxidative stress through various mechanisms. In this review, the classification of polyphenolic compounds and their important bioactivity with a focus on human health are discussed, along with their potential as alternative therapy for treating COVID-19 patients by inhibiting SARS-CoV-2. The inclusion of polyphenolic compounds in foods has shown benefits for extending shelf life and promoting human health.

Comparison of Flavonoid O-Glycoside, C-Glycoside and Their Aglycones on Antioxidant Capacity and Metabolism during In Vitro Digestion and In Vivo

Liangqin Xie et al.

Summary: This study compared the differences between flavonoid O-glycoside and C-glycoside in terms of their antioxidant activities and metabolism. The aglycones had higher activity but unstable structures, while the sugar substituents reduced the activity and improved stability. Moreover, C-glycoside was more stable than O-glycoside, which contributed to their differences in absorption and metabolism in vivo.

Aging and Wound Healing of the Skin: A Review of Clinical and Pathophysiological Hallmarks

Kamarul Ariffin Khalid et al.

Summary: Aging is a universal process that can cause diminished organ function and various diseases. The most conspicuous effects of aging are visible on the skin, which acts as a barrier against external insults. Skin aging involves both intrinsic and extrinsic processes that mutually interact. There are significant morphological changes at all levels in aged skin, greatly impacting its characteristics. While the skin has the ability to heal and restore its normal structure and function, aging negatively affects its healing function by prolonging inflammation and increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. This leads to a shift in the healing process towards protein degradation, resulting in chronic wound healing with complications.

Carlina acaulis essential oil: a candidate product for agrochemical industry due to its pesticidal capacity

Nickolas G. Kavallieratos et al.

Summary: Carlina acaulis essential oil (EO) showed high efficacy against several pests of medical and agricultural importance, including Acarus siro, Alphitobius diaperinus, and Oryzaephilus surinamensis. The EO led to high mortality rates in both adults and larvae of these pests. The efficacy of C. acaulis EO was found to be higher than that of pirimiphos-methyl, a conventional insecticide. This suggests that C. acaulis EO could be a reliable and eco-friendly alternative for pest management strategies.
