Synthesis of 1,3-Dioxan-2-ones by Photo-Aerobic Selenium-π-Acid Multicatalysis

Kilian A. Mueller et al.

Summary: An expedient method for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from homoallylic carbonic acid esters using photo-aerobic selenium-pi-acid multicatalysis is reported. This method directly activates the C-C double bond of homoallylic carbonic acid esters using a pyrylium dye and a diselane, with ambient air as the sole oxidant and visible light as an energy source, without relying on stoichiometric addition of electrophiles or pre-installed leaving groups.

Synthesis of nitroarenes and azoxyarenes through the selenium-mediated on water oxidation of aryl amines

Antonella Capperucci et al.

Summary: Selenium-promoted oxidations enable a broad range of oxidative functional group interconversions. Anilines are oxidized in water with hydrogen peroxide using selenium catalysts, which determine the type of oxidation product. Nitroarenes are obtained using diphenyl diselenide or benzeneseleninic acid, while azoxyarenes are formed using selenium dioxide or sodium seleninate. The reaction mechanism depends on the reactivity of Se(IV) active oxidants, with Se(VI) species not being involved.

Electrochemical Organoselenium Catalysis for the Selective Activation of Alkynes: Easy Access to Carbonyl-pyrroles/oxazoles from N-Propargyl Enamines/Amides

Mrinmay Baidya et al.

Summary: Intramolecular electro-oxidative addition of enamines or amides to nonactivated alkynes was achieved to obtain carbonyl-pyrroles or-oxazoles from N-propargyl derivatives. Organoselenium was used as the electrocatalyst, functioning as a pi-Lewis acid to selectively activate the alkyne for successful nucleophilic addition. The synthetic strategy allows for a wide range of substrate scope with up to 93% yield. Several mechanistic experiments, including the isolation of a selenium-incorporated intermediate adduct, shed light on the electrocatalytic pathway.
