Improving the technological readiness of time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry for enhancing fingermark recovery-towards operational deployment

Deborah Charlton et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of ToF-SIMS and standard processes in fingermark recovery on various surfaces, and found that ToF-SIMS visualized more fingerprints and enhanced detail even when standard processes failed. The study also explored the use of simsMVA for multivariate analysis to simplify data analysis and image generation processes.

Application of MALDI MS imaging after sequential processing of latent fingermarks

R. Bradshaw et al.

Summary: Latent fingermarks can be visualized using various techniques to provide information about suspects and crime scenes. Mass spectrometric imaging techniques have shown the ability to provide additional ridge detail in some cases, surpassing traditional processing methods.

Imaging mass spectrometry of fingermarks on brass bullet casings using sample rotation

Charles J. Lee et al.

Summary: A rotation stage was developed to image the surface of bullet casings in ultra-high vacuum conditions using ToF-SIMS, and experiments were conducted to study the changes of fingermarks over time. By analyzing thin strips along the length of the casings and comparing the resulting images to those developed with cyanoacrylate and BY40, it was found that ToF-SIMS images displayed finer details of the fingermarks. The effects of curvature of the round casings on fingermark morphology were assessed, and distortions caused by differences in surface curvature and deposition methods were found to be acceptable.
