Optimizing extraction of antioxidative biostimulant from waste onion peels for microalgae cultivation via response surface model

Uganeeswary Suparmaniam et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method using onion peel as a biostimulant to enhance microalgae biomass productivity. The extraction parameters were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) and showed a strong correlation with microalgae biomass concentration and lipid content. The biostimulant extracted under optimal conditions exhibited promising bioactivities, including antioxidant activity and phenolic and flavonoid content. These findings suggest that onion waste-derived biostimulant can significantly promote microalgae proliferation, providing a roadmap for high-density microalgae farming and improving the efficiency of the microalgae industry.

Strigolactones in Rhizosphere Communication: Multiple Molecules With Diverse Functions

Yee Jia Kee et al.

Summary: Strigolactones (SLs) are root-secreted molecules that have diverse functions in the rhizosphere. They act as germination stimulants and branching factors for mycorrhizal fungi, as chemoattractants for parasitic plants, and as sensors and regulators of the rhizosphere microbiome. Different plant species have structurally diverged SLs, suggesting that different molecules play different roles in planta and the rhizosphere. D14/KAI2 receptors have evolved to perceive various SLs or SL-like compounds, highlighting the complex interactions between plants and their rhizosphere environment.

Performance of cocultivation of Chlorella vulgaris and four different fungi in biogas slurry purification and biogas upgrading by induction of strigolactone (GR24) and endophytic bacteria

Yuan Ji et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the best fungi to form the algal-bacterial-fungal symbionts and identify the optimal conditions for the synchronous processing of biogas slurry and biogas. The results showed that the C. vulgaris-endophytic bacteria-Ganoderma lucidum symbionts had the highest growth rate, carbonic anhydrase activity, chlorophyll a content, and photosynthetic performance when 10(-9) M GR24 was added. Under these optimal conditions, the removal efficiency of COD, TN, TP, and CO2 reached 78.36 +/- 6.98%, 81.63 +/- 7.35%, 84.05 +/- 7.16%, and 65.18 +/- 6.12%, respectively. This approach provides a theoretical basis for the selection and optimization of algal-bacterial-fungal symbionts for biogas slurry and biogas purification.

The effects of influent chemical oxygen demand and strigolactone analog concentration on integral biogas upgrading and pollutants removal from piggery wastewater by different microalgae-based technologies

Heyuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of three microalgae-fungi/bacteria symbiotic systems stimulated with the strigolactone analog (GR24) to simultaneously remove nutrients from treated piggery wastewater and CO2 from biogas. The Chlorella vulgar-is-Ganoderma lucidum-endophytic bacteria co-cultivation systems achieved the best photosynthetic performance and microalgae growth at an initial COD concentration of 1200 mg/L. The highest nutrient/CO2 removal efficiencies were obtained under the appropriate COD concentration (1200 mg/L), and 10-9 M GR24 significantly accelerated the removal efficiencies.

Results showed that the addition of an algal-bacterial-fungal consortium with 10-9 M strigolactone (GR24) had the greatest promotion effect on the growth and yield of algae. The highest removal efficiencies were achieved for chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and tetracycline.

Environmental strigolactone drives early growth responses to neighboring plants and soil volume in pea

Cara D. Wheeldon et al.

Summary: Recent studies have made significant progress in understanding how plants detect their neighbors through various mechanisms such as touch, reflected light, volatile organic chemicals, and root exudates. While the importance of root exudates in neighbor detection is still unclear, there is evidence that they can help plants distinguish between kin and non-kin neighbors. Additionally, strigolactones, as plant hormones, may play a crucial role in neighbor detection. These findings contribute to a better understanding of plant interactions and growth regulation.
