Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitory Activity of Canthin-6-One Alkaloids and the Roots of Eurycoma longifolia and Eurycoma harmandiana

Rattanathorn Choonong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the PDE-5 inhibitory activity of Eurycoma longifolia and Eurycoma harmandiana plants, with canthin-6-one alkaloids showing strong inhibitory effects. In vitro root cultures of EH have higher concentrations of canthin-6-one alkaloids, making them a potential replacement for intact plants and a promising focus for further research and development as health supplements.

Revised Species Delimitation in the Giant Water Lily Genus Victoria (Nymphaeaceae) Confirms a New Species and Has Implications for Its Conservation

Lucy T. Smith et al.

Summary: Reliably documenting and delimiting plant species is crucial for their protection and sustainable utilization. In this study, a total-evidence approach is applied to delimit and document species in the South American genus Victoria using historical records, horticulture and geography, morphological dataset, and genomic data. Three confirmed species are identified, including a newly discovered species. This study demonstrates the importance of combining different types of data to enhance the reliability of identifying and studying morphologically challenging groups.

Medicinal plants as a potential source of Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors: A review

A. Anand Ganapathy et al.

Summary: This paper reviewed 97 medicinal plants with PDE5 inhibitory effect, of which 77 were selected based on their traditional use as aphrodisiacs. Isoflavones and biflavones were identified as the major active constituents responsible for action, while Icariin and Icariside II were found to be the most effective inhibitors from natural sources. Traditional medicines containing extracts of Ginkgo biloba, Kaempferia parviflora, Clerodendrum colebrookianum, Eurycoma longifolia, and Vitis vinifera were also found to inhibit the PDE5 enzyme.
