Electrophysiological signatures of reward learning in the rodent touchscreen-based Probabilistic Reward Task

Ann M. Iturra-Mena et al.

Summary: Blunted reward learning and reward-related activation in the corticostriatal-midbrain circuitry are linked to anhedonia and depression. This study used event-related potentials and spectral analyses to identify the electrophysiological signatures of reward learning in rats. The findings suggest that these approaches could be used to evaluate novel therapeutics targeting anhedonia.

The association between type 2 diabetes and anhedonic subtype of major depression in hypertensive individuals

Hadrien Willame et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between type 2 diabetes and the anhedonic subtype of major depression in hypertensive individuals. The results showed that only the anhedonic subtype of major depression was significantly associated with a higher likelihood of having type 2 diabetes in hypertensive individuals. This study provides new perspectives for the development of therapeutic strategies for type 2 diabetes in hypertensive individuals.

More treatment but no less depression: The treatment-prevalence paradox

Johan Ormel et al.

Summary: Despite improvements in treatments for depression, the prevalence of depression in the general population has not decreased. The treatment-prevalence paradox (TPP) can be explained by seven possible factors, including the possibility that treatments are less effective in real-world settings and that treatment impact differs for chronic-recurrent cases compared to non-recurrent cases. Furthermore, the published literature may overestimate the efficacy of treatments, and the potential iatrogenic consequences of current treatments require further exploration.

Toward a Better Understanding of the Mechanisms and Pathophysiology of Anhedonia: Are We Ready for Translation?

Diego A. Pizzagalli

Summary: Anhedonia, the loss of pleasure or lack of reactivity to pleasurable stimuli, is a significant challenge in neuropsychiatric disorders. It is associated with poor disease course and treatment response in major depressive disorder, and has been linked to neural abnormalities that may be targets for prevention. Gaps in understanding anhedonia remain, and the author highlights the need for controlled clinical trials, relevant preclinical models, and clinical scales that incorporate advances in neuroscientific understanding. The author emphasizes the importance of an integrated, collaborative, cross-species, and multilevel approach to tackling anhedonia.

Neural Responses to Reward and Pleasant Pictures Prospectively Predict Remission From Depression

Julia Klawohn et al.

Summary: The study found that in a group of individuals with depression, those with more intact neural measures (RewP and LPP) at diagnosis were more likely to achieve full remission from depression during the follow-up period. These neural measures were identified as independent predictors of disease course.

Multiple domains of risk factors for first onset of depression in adolescent girls

Giorgia Michelini et al.

Summary: Multiple domains of risk factors in early adolescence are prospectively associated with first-onset depressive disorder (DD) and chronic/recurrent DD in adolescent girls. Some risk factors can independently predict the onset of depression.

Anhedonia in Semantic Dementia-Exploring Right Hemispheric Contributions to the Loss of Pleasure

Siobhan R. Shaw et al.

Summary: Semantic dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that results in progressive degradation of semantic knowledge, primarily in the anterior temporal lobe. The emergence of significant socioemotional changes as the disease progresses highlights the impact of temporal lobe pathology on hedonic experience. Anhedonia severity in SD patients is more pronounced with predominantly right temporal lobe atrophy, suggesting a unique role of right-hemisphere structures in modulating pleasure experience.
