Acetylcholine deficiency disrupts extratelencephalic projection neurons in the prefrontal cortex in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Qingtao Sun et al.

Summary: Short-term memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease have been associated with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex. This study examined extratelencephalic projection neurons and found reduced neural activity in the medial prefrontal cortex of 5xFAD mice, leading to object recognition memory deficits. The researchers also discovered that these neurons received fewer cholinergic inputs from the basal forebrain in the 5xFAD mouse model. This study provides insights into the neural mechanism underlying object recognition memory impairments in Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: Headbutting in bovid species can lead to chronic or acute brain trauma, with muskoxen potentially being more susceptible than bighorn sheep. This study provides preliminary evidence of brain injury in these species through the presence of tau-immunoreactive lesions.

A crosstalk between gut and brain in sepsis-induced cognitive decline

Eotaxin-1 (CCL11) in neuroinflammatory disorders and possible role in COVID-19 neurologic complications

Donya Nazarinia et al.

Summary: Neurologic complications such as depression, anxiety, and muscle pain may persist for months in COVID-19 patients. Recent studies suggest that the chemokine CCL11 may play a role in neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disorders. Elevated levels of CCL11 have been found in COVID-19 patients, indicating its potential as a biomarker for post-COVID-19 neurologic complications. Modulating chemokine levels may help prevent or reduce these complications.

GSK3β is involved in promoting Alzheimer's disease pathologies following chronic systemic exposure to Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide in amyloid precursor proteinNL-F/NL-F knock-in mice

Muzhou Jiang et al.

Summary: Chronic systemic exposure to PgLPS derived from Pg induces neuroinflammation and tau hyperphosphorylation in an AD mouse model, leading to learning and memory deficits. This process is mediated by the activation of GSK3 beta and the increase of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting a potential link between periodontitis and the progression of AD pathology.

Altered Gut Microbial Metabolites in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: Signals in Host-Microbe Interplay

Li Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed differences in gut microbiota between patients with pre-onset amnestic mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, with significant variances in tryptophan metabolites, short-chain fatty acids, and other metabolites between Alzheimer's disease and healthy controls. These findings suggest an association between fecal-based gut microbial signatures and the presence and progression of Alzheimer's disease, potentially providing a target for microbiota or dietary intervention in Alzheimer's disease prevention.
