Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon size tracers

A. Maragkoudakis et al.

Summary: This study examines the dependence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) band intensity ratios on the average number of carbon atoms and assesses their effectiveness as tracers for PAH size using the NASA Ames PAH Infrared Spectroscopic Database. The research finds that band ratios including the 3.3 μm PAH band provide the best PAH size tracers for small-to-intermediate sized PAHs. Additionally, band ratios including the sum of the 15-20 μm PAH features and the 6.2 or 7.7 μm bands also serve as good tracers for PAH size in this range.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the ionized gas in galaxies with active nuclei

A. Silva-Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the main types of PAH molecules present in galaxies with active nuclei and the local physical conditions of their irradiating sources using optical and infrared data, as well as the characteristics of the residing ionized gas. Photoionization models built with the CLOUDY code successfully reproduce optical emission line ratios and PAH intensity ratios. The study finds that species with 10-82 carbon atoms are the most abundant in the sample, and suggests further exploration of specific PAH species for future experimental and observational studies.

Anharmonicity and the IR Emission Spectrum of Neutral Interstellar PAH Molecules

Cameron J. Mackie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of CH stretching and out-of-plane bending modes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules using anharmonic density functional theory. The study also calculates the infrared emission spectrum of vibrationally excited species in interstellar space and compares the results with laboratory spectra. The findings have implications for understanding the molecular inventory of space.

Infrared Spectroscopy of Jet-cooled GrandPAHs in the 3-100 μm Region

A. K. Lemmens et al.

Summary: This study presents the first IR spectra of jet-cooled large PAHs, which are essential for assessing the accuracy of astronomical models and interpreting interstellar IR emission. It was found that while conventional harmonic calculations show good agreement with experimental results in certain frequency regions, anharmonic treatment leads to significant frequency shifts and intensity changes for large PAHs, making the default results unreliable. Further research is needed to improve the understanding of the deviations in the CH out-of-plane region.

Modeling the infrared cascade spectra of small PAHs: the 11.2 μm band

Cameron J. Mackie et al.

Summary: The profile of the 11.2 micron feature in the IR cascade emission spectra of PAH molecules is investigated using a vibrational anharmonic method. Various factors were found to affect the profile, with rotational temperature being the only factor altering the blue wing of the feature.
