Genome assembly and genetic dissection of a prominent drought-resistant maize germplasm

Tian Tian et al.

Summary: The high-quality assembly of the CIMBL55 genome, a drought-resistant maize germplasm, provides valuable genetic resources for the improvement of maize drought resistance. The genomic and genetic variation analyses indicate that CIMBL55 contains favorable alleles of previously identified drought-resistant candidate genes, which contribute to its excellent drought resistance. Specifically, the gene ZmRtn16, encoding a reticulon-like protein, was found to enhance drought resistance by facilitating vacuole H+-ATPase activity, highlighting the importance of vacuole proton pumps in maize drought resistance. The assembled CIMBL55 genome serves as a foundation for genetic dissection and enhancement of plant drought resistance, thereby supporting global food security.

Genome-Wide Association Study Reveals Genetic Architecture and Candidate Genes for Yield and Related Traits under Terminal Drought, Combined Heat and Drought in Tropical Maize Germplasm

Alimatu Sadia Osuman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated 162 tropical maize inbred lines and identified SNP markers and candidate genes associated with the tolerance of maize to combined heat and drought stresses. Some of the SNP markers had pleiotropic effects on multiple traits, and several genes regulating plant responses to various stresses were also identified. These findings provide valuable information for breeding climate smart maize varieties that can adapt to tropical conditions.

Identification of Genomic Regions Associated with Agronomic and Disease Resistance Traits in a Large Set of Multiple DH Populations

Kassahun Sadessa et al.

Summary: In this study, 879 doubled haploid (DH) lines derived from 26 biparental populations were evaluated for agronomic traits and disease resistance. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified several SNPs associated with grain yield, anthesis date, height, and disease resistance. Genomic prediction showed moderate-to-high accuracy. These findings provide valuable insights into the genetic basis of MLN resistance, grain yield, and other agronomic traits.

ABA-inducible DEEPER ROOTING 1 improves adaptation of maize to water deficiency

Xuanjun Feng et al.

Summary: Root architecture remodelling plays a critical role in maintaining forage moisture in water-limited soil. The study discovered that ABA-inducible ZmDRO1 in maize can promote root growth in the downward direction and enhance water acquisition from deeper soil, resulting in improved drought resistance and grain yield under water-limited conditions. This finding suggests the potential application of ABA-inducible ZmDRO1 in breeding drought-resistant maize varieties.

Natural variations of ZmSRO1d modulate the trade-off between drought resistance and yield by affecting ZmRBOHC-mediated stomatal ROS production in maize

Huajian Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the molecular regulation of maize drought resistance was investigated through a genome-wide association study. It was found that the ZmSRO1d-R allele has a dual effect on drought resistance and grain yields. Interestingly, this allele was selected against during maize domestication and modern breeding, but its reintroduction into modern maize cultivars could contribute to food security under drought stress caused by global climate change.

The role of transposon inverted repeats in balancing drought tolerance and yield-related traits in maize

Xiaopeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that transposon-associated inverted repeats play a role in drought resistance and yield-related traits in maize. Genome-wide analysis revealed a transposon-mediated posttranscriptional regulation network that balances plant drought tolerance and yield-related traits. These findings have potential implications for breeding crops with greater stress tolerance without compromising yield.

RNA-Seq Analysis of Gene Expression Changes Related to Delay of Flowering Time under Drought Stress in Tropical Maize

Kyung-Hee Kim et al.

Summary: The research has shown that drought can delay the flowering time of tropical maize, but the specific mechanism is unclear. By analyzing drought-responsive genes, it was found that genes related to flowering time undergo changes in expression under drought conditions, which may play a crucial role in affecting flowering time.

Manipulating ZmEXPA4 expression ameliorates the drought-induced prolonged anthesis and silking interval in maize

Boxin Liu et al.

Summary: Drought poses a major environmental threat to maize production, leading to yield losses due to asynchronism between male and female inflorescences during flowering. The gene ZmEXPA4 has been identified as having a significant relationship with increased ASI under drought conditions, and genetic manipulation of its expression has potential for trait improvement in maize ears.

Using high-throughput multiple optical phenotyping to decipher the genetic architecture of maize drought tolerance

Xi Wu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a high-throughput multiple optical phenotyping system to phenotype 368 maize genotypes under drought stress. Through the analysis of image-based traits, it identified 10,080 effective and heritable indicators of maize drought responses, revealing numerous significant locus-trait associations and candidate genes. The combination of high-throughput phenotyping and GWAS proved to be an effective approach in dissecting the genetic architecture of complex traits and identifying genes associated with drought tolerance.
